PANDOLFI’S LEGENDARY NIGHT LIFTS THE STONY BROOK SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL OVER PORT JEFF: Friday night was a perfect one for Tim Pandolfi (Medford). He scored his 1,000th career point, one of his career-high 38, in an unexpected rout over rival Port Jefferson; however, one of the most memorable nights of his incredible career was almost derailed when he awoke earlier in the day with flu-like symptoms. By the game’s end he had an exuberant smile as he became the 6th member of the 1,000 point club in Stony Brook’s 89 year history. The Bears began the game favorably as Richie Armand (Hempstead) grabbed a steal and turned it into a 2-0 lead. However, the Royals would score the next 8 points to take control with 5:12 left in the 1st quarter. A turning point in the game came soon after. Port Jeff had an 11-4 edge when Pandolfi drove to the hoop, scored a difficult basket and drew the foul, leaving him one point shy of his milestone. The entire gym stood in anticipation as he stepped up to the line with 999 career points, then he entered the pantheon of Stony Brook basketball greats by sinking the free throw with 3:10 left in the first quarter. His teammates swarmed him, his mother joined him on the floor and the crowd chanted, “TIM PAN-DOL-FI!” Coach Mike Hickey explained the significance of the moment to the crowd, that Pandolfi was joining Drake Womack ’72, Dave Wilson ’78, Jonas Fischer ’94, Matt Mattimore ’95 and Steve Harney ’04 as the only male players to have scored 1,000 career points in a Stony Brook uniform. As the hoopla subsided, an important game had to be revisited between two teams tied for 2nd place in League VIII. The contest had been tightly contested and neither team had held a double-digit lead, which is what made Stony Brook’s 4th quarter so delightfully surprising. Coach Hickey put the press on to begin the pivotal frame and the Royals had no answer for it. Armand began the quarter with a beautiful baseline drive and basket and Kai Strachan (Bahamas) scored 4 straight points, courtesy of the press, to give the Brook a 48-39 advantage. The crowd roared louder and louder in disbelief as steal followed steal and great play followed great play in a nail-biter-turned-laugher. The game ended with The Stony Brook School defeating Port Jefferson, 71-43. In a game that pitted two one-loss teams against each other this was a fantastic win for the Bears. Pandolfi was his unstoppable self, toying with his defenders and handling the ball as though it were attached to his hand. What was equally exciting was how the entire team performed in big situations. Armand played his finest game in a Bears uniform, scoring huge buckets, directing the offense and wreaking havoc on defense. Forrest Hull (NJ) started his first game on the varsity and played some huge minutes early, drawing a number of fouls with his deceptive pump fakes. Farqu Taylor (Elmhurst) was tenacious on the boards and equally effective matching up on Port Jeff’s better scorers. Do not let the fact that Marco Masakayan (Setauket) did not score lead you to believe he did not have an impact on the game. His 4 first half steals set the tone early and his confidence with ball handling and penetrating helped the offense find its flow. The win was the 230th of Coach Mike Hickey’s career as he evened his record against the Royals to 7-7. It was also his first win over Port Jeff since 2004, the last time they were our league opponent. Tim Pandolfi is currently first on Long Island in scoring with 27.7 points per game. GIRLS XC WIN BACK-TO-BACK COUNTY TITLES: The girls cross country team began a historic day for the Bears by winning their 2nd consecutive Suffolk County Title and 4th overall in program history. Their win, followed by County Title wins for the boys cross country and girls soccer teams gave the blue and white a record 3 championships in one day. For the girls to repeat as champions they had to take down Southold, a team that defeated them in the first dual meet of the season. On a cold day at Sunken Meadow State Park the Lady Bears left their previous performance against the Settlers in the rear view mirror as they motored to a 24-31 win for Stony Brook’s 34th Suffolk County Championship. Freshman Margot Rashba (Port Jefferson), as she has all season, led the way, winning in a time of 21:23.4 to become the 1st SBS girls individual County Champion since Laura Whitney in 1981. She battled defending champion, senior Ivy Croteau of Southold, over the tough Sunken Meadow 5k course. After coming around the moat, in the last 400m of the race Rashba broke away to win the race with an impressive 12 second lead and 11 second personal record. Here’s what the County Class D Champion had to say about the race: “We all ran our absolute best today and it payed off! We all knew that we had it in us and the outcome showed. As an individual I was extremely happy. I had a personal record for my time as well as the title! Overall, it was a great day and a great race and I couldn’t ask for anything more!” The rest of the Varsity team exhibited excellent teamwork as well, contributing to the team’s win. Ayana Aaron(Nesconset, 23:10.4), Aileen Catapano (Southold, 25:52.2), Alexandra Damianos (St. James, 24:19.7), Kathy Kim (Korea, 23:25.7), Margot Rashba (Port Jefferson, 21:23.4), Kriupa Samson (Saudi Arabia, 27:52.2) and Maria Paz Valenzuela (Chile, 24:06.1). Valenzuela and Damianos also displayed grueling races to the finish line as they each sprinted to finish less than one second in front of the Southold competitors. Award winners for finishing in the top 10 of Class ‘D’ were Rashba, Aaron, Kim, Damianos, and Valenzuela. The Lady Bears fast performances earned them the distinction of County Class ‘D’ Champions for the second year in a row. By merit of their victory our team has earned a spot this Saturday, November 13 at the NYSPHAA Cross Country Championships in Pawling, NY. ...hide

Founded in 1922 with the motto “Character Before Career,” The Stony Brook School is an independent Christian college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 7-12. It exists to challenge young men and women to know Jesus Christ as Lord, to love others as themselves, and to grow in knowledge and skill, in order that they may serve the world through their character and leadership.
