SBS GIRLS SOCCER IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - The Varsity Girls Soccer team played in the “Final Four” for the Class ‘C’ New York State Girls Soccer title against Seton Catholic High School (Plattsburgh, NY) at the Tompkins-Cortland Community College, in Cortland, New York. The game went into the second over time with no goals made by either team. In the 97th minute Kelsey Wentling (New York) scored off an assist from Michelle Hennessey (Stony Brook) to lead Stony Brook (12-5-2) to a 1-0 victory in the Class C State semifinal at Tompkins-Cortland Community College. The Lady Bears will now play against Sauquoit Valley (Section III) in the state final at 9:00 am on Saturday, November 21, at SUNY-Cortland. SBS GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL HISTORIC SEASON - The 2009 Varsity Girls’ Volleyball team has just completed one of, if not, the most successful volleyball seasons in school history. With an 11-3 record, 10 out of 11 wins were shutouts, 3-0. In the first round of the playoffs they avenged their loss against Pierson during the season with a rousing 3-1 win in front of a raucous home crowd. They were defeated by Shelter Island in the county championship on November 6. The team this year was very balanced with strong teamwork skills and without a single dominating player. They played very tough defense, followed by strong blocking, and a consistent attack from multiple positions. Their defense was anchored by Jessica Winston (Stony Brook), Emily Stone (Pennsylvania), and Alex Angove (Virginia). Natalie Istrati (Virginia) and Christine Boss (New Hampshire), both over 6', dominated in the middle with their blocking and consistent middle hitting. Shelby Green (Mt. Vernon) and Linnea Peckham (Pennsylvania) brought hitting power to the outside spot with Green occasionally doubling in the middle. Emma Moley (Bellport) and Mona Kaleh (Saudi Arabia) run the offense as the team's setters. Kayla Winston (Stony Brook), a 6 year varsity starter, added serving and outside hitting power but was plagued with injuries this season so she saw limited playing time. Excellent all around play coupled with very strong serving has enabled this team to achieve higher than any previous team from The Stony Brook School. ...hide

SBS GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY COMPETES AT STATES - The Stony Brook Girls’ Cross Country team has completed an impressive season full of personal records. The team has tremendous enthusiasm and a drive to run their best at all their meets and to encourage one another throughout workouts and races. Earning All-League honors are Kathy Kim (Korea) and Sarah Higgins (E. Setauket). The top seven Lady Bears proceeded to the State Qualifiers: Ayana Aaron(Nesconset), Aileen Catapano (Southold), Alexandra Damianos (St. James), Sarah Han (Korea), Sarah Higgins (E. Setauket), Kathy Kim (Korea), and Elizabeth Shin (Korea). Award winners for finishing in the top 10 of Class ‘D’ were Aaron, Damianos, and Kim. The Lady Bears raced hard to personal records and their fast performances earned them the distinction of County Class ‘D’ Champions. The Lady Bears completed their last race of the season at the NYSPHSAA Cross Country Championships held at Plattsburgh, NY. Although individuals have competed at the state championships, after twenty-seven years this is only the third girls’ team in The Stony Brook School’s history to compete at the state championships. Despite the cold and rain during the 5k race, the Lady Bears came away with more personal records, team bonding, and the goal to return to the championships next year. Higgins came in first for the Lady bears with a time of 23:05.2, only 11.8 seconds behind her own personal best time. Following close behind, Aaron (23:10.4) took off an astounding 1 minute and 13 seconds from her personal record. Third for the Bears, and following suit with a personal record, was Kim (23:17.8). Rounding out the scorers were Damianos (24:00.5) who was only 4.3 seconds off her personal record, and Catapano (25.02.9) who ran a personal best. Also running their fastest, setting personal records and contributing to the team’s success at the state meet were Shin with an impressive 54.3 second personal record (25:14.7) and Han (25:45.1). ...hide

SBS BOYS CROSS COUNTRY COMPETES AT STATES - The Stony Brook Boys Cross Country team has led a great season. Earning All-League honors are James Jenden (Saudi Arabia), Carlo Masakayan (Setauket), and Joshua Kim (Flushing). Award winners for finishing in the top 10 of the Section XI County Class ‘D’ Championships were Jenden and Masakayan. Jenden also earned All-Division honors for Section XI Division IV. Four members of the boys’ team qualified to run the 5k course at the NYSPHSAA Cross Country Championships in Plattsburgh. The boys raced to their best times of the season and personal records, showing their hard work has paid off. Jenden (17:57.5) finished first for the Bears. SBS GIRLS SOCCER WIN REGIONALS - The Varsity Girls Soccer team finished the regular season with a 9-5-2 mark. The top goal scorers were Donna Liotine(17g/6a) (Medford), Michelle Hennessy(15g/9a) (Stony Brook), Kelsey Wentling(8g/4a) (New York), and Tina Stavola(8g/4a) (Setauket). The defense was led by All-state goalie Danielle Pappas (East Setauket), Sweeper Brianna Stiklikas (Nesconset), and stopper Kierran Petersen (Greenlawn). Newcomer Lisa Harbes (Mattituck) was an outstanding 2 way player for the Lady Bears, and freshman Gianna Scavo (Mount Sinai) added some scoring. The Lady Bears won the county Class ‘C’ Championships for the third year in a row. They won the Long Island Championships against Friends Academy in Nassau county for the second consecutive year. On Monday, November 16, the Lady Bears returned to the regional finals, defeating SS Seward (Section IX) 3-0 at Diamond in the Pines, Coram to win the New York State Regional Championship for the second year in row. For the second consecutive year, the Lady Bears are heading to Cortland, New York, to compete among the “Final Four” for the Class ‘C’ New York State Girls Soccer title. This Friday at 9:00am ET, the Girls' Varsity Soccer team will be playing against Seton Catholic High School (Plattsburgh, NY) at Tompkins-Cortland Community College, in Cortland, New York.
