Set among the beautiful mountains of northern New Hampshire, The White Mountain School is a college preparatory boarding and day school for students in grades 9-12. Since our founding in 1886, we have remained true to the original focus of New England boarding schools: the development of mind, body and spirit. We develop the mind through our college preparatory curriculum and through a campus-wide ethos of curiosity and engagement in learning. We develop the body through sports and other physical activities, making full use of our spectacular natural setting. We develop the spirit through reflection, exploration of meaning and purpose, and service in the broader world. The White Mountain School is intentionally small because only in a small school can we treat each student as an individual and nourish individual talents and passions. Students graduate with a solid college preparatory foundation and with a strong sense of themselves.

School Notes:
- White Mountain School Our website (http://www.whitemountain.org/) is the best way to really get a sense of our School, its programs – both academic and extracurricular, and our School philosophy. To summarize, we describe the important and unique aspects of our School and its programs as “defining characteristics.” Here are our four “defining characteristics.”
- ~ COLLEGE PREPARATION As a college preparatory school, we follow a structured and traditional liberal arts curriculum. We believe that a broad approach to human understanding of our world and its interconnections is essential for success in college and life. We strive to engage each student by encouraging them to find their voice and to share their insights and opinions. AP courses and opportunities for independent research offer particular challenge for juniors and seniors. Our Field Courses are terrific academic experiences (domestic and international) conducted outside of the classroom: they are offered twice each year and last for five days each. WMS graduates are prepared for college because they know how to think, how to make connections and how to communicate their ideas.
- ~ INTENTIONALLY SMALL We are intentionally small because we know that only in a small school can we treat each student as an individual. Teachers get to know their students well; students realize that their teachers are easily accessible. In a community of our size students can explore their interests, pursue their passions, initiate activities and develop friendships with their teachers and with students across the grades. At WMS no one is lost in “the shuffle.” Everyone matters. Everyone.
- ~ EPISCOPAL HERITAGE As an Episcopal school, we honor and celebrate the unique worth of each individual. We welcome students of all faiths and encourage them to grow in their own understanding their faith or of their spirituality. Our Episcopal heritage inspires our commitment to community service (local and international), it informs our relationship to the natural world and it is why we have always been a school that respects each student as an individual with unique talents and passions.
- ~ MOUNTAIN SETTING Seventy-five years ago, our visionary headmistress “Aunt Dot” McLane moved the School to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. In these mountains we are “surrounded by things greater than ourselves.” We connect with a purpose beyond ourselves. Our mountain setting inspires us to explore more broadly, to think more deeply and to experience the fullness of life. Our mountain setting also allows our students to explore and excel in unique outdoor sports offerings.
- ~ COME SEE FOR YOURSELF! We will happily arrange a visit so you can experience WMS in action. Meanwhile, visit us online and be sure to contact us with questions. We look forward to hearing from you.

5 More Schools and Their Founders
A private school in its infancy is quite different from the mature community it becomes over time. I wonder what the founders of these five schools would think about them today. I bet they would be very proud of their creations.
