Western Reserve Academy students and faculty teamed up in January to Go MAD (Make a Difference) during the second of three community service days.
The day had extra meaning as it coincided with Martin Luther King Day, linking the school's commitment to social mission -- and this year's theme to "Act with Compassion" -- to the spirit of Dr. King's life work. Working with a broad definition of community allowed this massive project to be quite widespread. Some contributors served right on the WRA campus, while others traveled as far as downtown Cleveland in their efforts. In all, 36 service projects took place, some of which included working at a Salvation Army warehouse; preparing and delivering treats for patients at a local hospice; cleaning the Wilson Hall greenhouse and planting new seeds; producing mass recycling bins, in the wood shop, for high-traffic areas on campus; and continuing work on both pottery bowls and soup production for the Empty Bowls project, which, according to the group's website, "is a grassroots effort to raise money and awareness in an effort to end hunger and food insecurity." ...hide
