The host team Stanstead College Spartans were finalists at the 2009 CAIS Senior Girls Invitational Soccer Tournament held October 16 to 18.
King's-Edgehill from Nova Scotia defeated the Spartans 2-1 in a dramatic shootout. For the Spartans, this was their best showing ever at this annual matchup of teams from Canada’s independent schools.
KES got on the scoreboard first in the opening half, answered shortly thereafter by one from the Spartans’ Juliet Numfor – her fifth of the tournament.
And that’s how the score stayed through the remainder of regular play and after two 10-minute overtime periods, putting the results of the CAIS championship on the shoulders of the KES keeper Lauren Chamberlain and Stanstead’s Dawn Namagoose. The stalemate finally ended when KES kicked in the go-ahead.
The championship was a terrific end to the three-day tournament, which saw 20 teams from Quebec, Ontario and Atlantic Canada divided into five round-robin pools. Saturday, these were realigned into Division I, Division II and a Friendly Division. Stanstead made it into the Division I by defeating The Study 3-0 followed by a 1-0 win over an extremely competitive Holy Trinity squad. A 1-1 tie against Rothesay-Netherwood Saturday morning put Stanstead at the top of their pool.
In the quarter final, the Spartans defeated St. Clement’s School 1-0. This is as far as Stanstead College has ever made it in this tournament. Sunday morning, they challenged Bishop Strachan School in the semi-final, winning 1-0 on a late-game goal by Allysa Palmer-Dixon and sending the Spartans to their dramatic championship final.
Congratulations to KES and our Spartans for an amazing end to a fantastic tournament. And congratulations to all the players and coaches from all the teams. ...hide
