A diverse Holderness community strengthens the School in many ways: it provides a richer and more wide-ranging educational environment; it ensures that the School remains responsive to its dynamic regional, national and international environments; it enables people to learn to participate in a community that encompasses several dimensions of diversity; and it prepares students for the world beyond Holderness. These benefits are all corollaries to the ideal of “unity within diversity” celebrated in the School’s mission, an ideal we embrace in our daily lives at Holderness.

All boarding students enrolling in the Middle School have Personal Teachers—faculty or staff who help provide the extra care and attention needed for a child of this age group who is away from home. Personal Teachers typically eat most meals with their students, oversee their schedules, visit with them at bedtime and spend time together on weekends.

Upper School students have Faculty Advisors—faculty or staff who provide adult friendship and guidance to help students in a variety of ways. This may include a trip into town for supplies, assistance in making travel arrangements or a good, heart-to-heart conversation.
