Darrow students also have many opportunities to express their creativity in the performing arts. Theater is an especially popular activity at Darrow. Students who substitute theater for an athletic activity meet daily for two hours at the end of the academic day. In addition to acting, students construct sets and work backstage on props, costumes, lighting, and stage management. Three major productions each year include a fall play, the Winter Revels, and a spring musical. The Winter Revels is a medieval celebration of the solstice featuring music, dance, and a play within a play.

The campus sports three new outdoor tennis courts. Physical education helps provide a balanced daily routine. Recreation courses are a part of student academic life. Sport clubs and intramural events provide ongoing opportunities for competition. In warm weather, Maharishi Academy offers water-sport classes in kayaking, canoeing, and windsurfing. In winter months, students can borrow cross-country skis from the gym and glide across the campus paths. The Gymnasium is a 25,000-square-foot indoor facility, which includes: basketball courts, a 28-foot rock climbing wall, weight room, gymnastics center, and ping-pong tables. From May to mid-September, nearby lakes provide water sports and water recreation. The campus also has a multi-use soccer field. (photo from one of Maharishi Academy's sister schools)

Student voices are valued at CSW. We are one of the few independent schools in the country with voting student members on our Board of Trustees. From dorm leaders to student government, and from the Curriculum Committee to the Judicial Board, students have real opportunities to voice their opinions and initiate changes our community and policies. There's even a group of four students who coordinate our twice-weekly assembly time, which allows the student body to come together for town meetings, guest speakers, and shared experiences.

The Gunnery curriculum emphasizes reading, writing, and speaking. All freshman, sophomore, and junior students are required to take Writing Lab once a week. This Lab augments writing skills introduced in English through in-depth treatment of specific grammar issues, organization, and cohesion of their written work. Students are also required to write a Junior Research Paper, a college level research paper sponsored jointly by the English and History Departments. Students explore the intersection of historical and literary events in this paper. Also in the Junior year, students are required to take a public speaking course. After a term of practice and preparation students are required to give a five to ten minute speech in front of the entire student body.
