At Holderness, students play an important role in the daily management of the school. In a unique balloting system that has existed at Holderness for over 50 years, student leaders are elected by all members of the community on the basis of dependability, initiative, fairness, and leadership. Each junior or senior has an equal opportunity to become one of seventy school, residential, or job crew leaders. Students participate daily in the student job program, a program in which everyone gives back to the community on an ongoing and regular basis. Community service days and opportunities are available throughout the year.

As a college-preparatory school, the main focus of cadet life at St. John's Northwestern Military Academy is academics. We do all we can to make sure each of our cadets is prepared for college, the workforce, military service, or whatever he chooses to do after high school. Our College Counselors work with each cadet throughout his high school years to help him determine his path both during and after high school. For the past 15 years, 100% of the graduates of the Academy have been accepted to a college or university.

Two indoor rowing tanks allow the boys and girls crew teams to practice in inclement weather. Otherwise, the teams row out of two boathouses on the edge of campus. Crew is one of 13 interscholastic sports available to Brooks students. Last year, eight of those teams won league or tournament championships.
