At Stevenson, students can explore many opportunities in theater, dance and art. Through our fine arts program, students gain confidence in developing film, and printing negatives; they take the stage and dance (modern, jazz, swing, salsa, or ballet); they spin the wheel in pottery class; and they develop skills in stone carving, wood construction, welding and metal fabrication. Students also learn the fundamentals in theater arts including mime, vocal projection, stage movement, and basic characterization. Opportunities to sing and dance on stage are another form of artistic expression for our students.

Any military school teaches more than just quality academics. Military schools also teach students how to interact with superiors and lead subordinates. This provides the student with real practical experience that they can take into the real world. Hargrave takes this a step further with its leadership lab, a place were leadership problems are presented to students for debate and study on the moral and ethical consequences of decisions.

Instruction is centered in grade-level teams. This allows teachers to get to know students as individuals, and to collaborate in supporting students’ success. Because of the favorable faculty/student ratio of 1:4, we are able to provide a significant amount of individual attention to each student and to help students understand their strengths as learners. Every student participates in the learning process—no student can get lost in the back row.

We challenge students academically with appropriately high standards and a rigorous student-centered curriculum that requires them to be active participants in their learning. Classroom activities call on students to be effective critical and creative thinkers, to integrate separate disciplines and to explore the larger moral, spiritual, and ethical questions of their work.
