The outdoors is a unique extension of the classroom experience. With the 600,000 acre White Mountain National Forest right outside out doors, we experience the summits, streams, waterfalls and rivers that surround us. Four times a year, we go into the field for three days of camping (sometimes it’s “cabin camping”) or hiking or biking or paddling or horseback riding. These Outdoor Learning Expeditions (OLEs) combine outdoor learning with outdoor recreation and focus on a variety of topics including subjects like wildlife habitat, fresh water ecology, national history, and environmental literature.

Holderness offers a rigorous academic program, a challenging and internationally known athletic program, and spiritual guidance through the Chapel program. Within each discipline, we seek to find ways to promote diversity and avoid specialization. The arts play a particularly important role in our vision of balance, as they provide unparalleled opportunities for learning and practicing creativity, imagination, resourcefulness, and self-discipline.

The Student Center is one of the most popular hubs of activity on campus. Two plasma televisions, a ping pong table, snack bar, computer stations and wireless internet access, two fireplaces and a book store make this an ideal home away from home for both day students and boarders.
