Reflections and Advice:

1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?

Groton is quite a bit smaller than some boarding schools, and it has preserved more of the feel of an old-fashioned boarding school, rather than just a sort of small college for high schoolers. Many old traditions have been preserved intact or in a slightly modified way. I always felt anchored in a long tradition of Grotonians, which made me feel more at home at school.

2.)  What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?

The thing I most value about Groton is how the people and the philosophy became a part of me, though without surplanting my own personality

3.)  What would you have done differently during your boarding school experience?

Frankly, I would have spent more time socializing.

4.)  What would you never want to change about your school?

Personally, I would never want them to get rid of the IInd Form, but apparently they are going to

5.)  What things could be improved about your school?

There could be more interaction between the Upper Schoolers and the Lower Schoolers.

6.)  Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?

They should go to a class. Academics are what Groton is really about

Academics:

1.) What did you like best about your school’s academics?

They were extremely rigorous. Not even in college was I so challenged. The vast majority of teachers were fabulous, again, to a greater degree than in college. The classes were always small.

2.) What did you like least about the academics in your school?

The occasional bad teacher really could spoil a class

Athletics:

1.) What did you like best about your school’s athletics?

The small teams. One could really bond with the other girls. Also, our undisputed dominance in sports like crew and cross country. Also, our renovated gym is fabulous.

2.) What did you like least about the athletics in your school?

We were required to do them, which on the more hand gave one something to do, but also was really not fun if one were inept at sports.

Art, Music, and Theatre:

1.) What did you like best about your school’s art program?

The Dramat performances were an event for the whole school.

2.) What did you like least about your school’s art program?

Since my graduation, the school has built an entirely new building, so I don't feel I can speak about the general antipathy towards the arts I felt at the time.

Extracurricular Opportunities:

1.) What did you like most about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?

The oppurtunities for students to start their own clubs

2.) What did you like least about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?

There were not enough. Also, new clubs were frequently not recieved well by the community

Dorm Life:

1.) What was the best thing about dorm life in your school?

The small size of the dorms and the required interaction like check-in and so forth.

2.) What did you like least about dorm life?

Random roomate pairing, not a common occurance, but usually a bad one

Dining:

1.) What was the best thing about your dining arrangements?

As long as the dining hall was open, you could take whatever you wanted

2.) What did you like least about your dining arrangements?

The ruts one would get in, eating the same thing for weeks

Social and Town Life:

1.) How welcome did you feel by the other students when you first arrived at the school?

At first, coming as a IInd Former, I felt I lacked maturity relative to the other in my class, so I didn't fit in well. However, by Upper School, I was fully adjusted, and now my friends from Groton are practically my family

2.) Describe the level of diversity and integration of students in your school:

Diversity is rather low, but integration was good. There were several homophobic incidents during my tenure there, but it was my impression that the school adriotly countered them, and those beliefs were held only by a few.

3.) Describe typical fun activities you did on a weekend:

Sports events, dances, movie-mall trips, day leaves

4.) What was the town like?

The town of Groton is extremely small. A CVS was built my last year at the school, and this was a huge deal. Other than that, there were pizza places, a small grocery store, one ice cream place, and an bagel place that was never open. Also, the school is a bit of a walk from town.
