Activities During Boarding School
I am going to be the Dorm President of Eliot Dorm. I'm a ballet dancer in the ballet major at The Walnut Hill School. They offer a wide range of weekend activites from apple picking to Skiing.
Reflections and Advice:
1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
I love The Walnut Hill School. There's an overwhelming sense of community and everybody is accepted. I am a very serious ballet dancer and The walnut Hill school offered the best of both worlds. I could continue my serious studies of ballet with very professional and qualified faculty as well as get an amazing education with teachers that care for their students. The dorm life was well organized and had a homely atmosphere. The students had to be in their rooms from 9-10pm doing their homework. This helped me a lot because I had a lot of friends living around me which was a distraction, but this mandatory study hour helped me to focus and get my work done.
2.)  What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
Boarding school was a very liberating experience for me. I was always fighting with my parents before I left and now I find myself more agreeable with my parents.
3.)  What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
I would never do ANYTHING differently about my Walnut HIll experience.
4.)  What would you never want to change about your school?
I hope that the acceptance level never changes at Walnut Hill. You could be gay and purple and people would still love you.
5.)  What things could be improved about your school?
The landscaping could be improved a little. But in the grand scheme of things, that really doesn't matter.
6.)  Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
Eliot is by far the best dorm. Anyone who goes here should live in Eliot! Also, make sure you talk to Lori Komlyn. She's the reason I'm there and she will be a big help.
Academics:
1.) What did you like best about your school’s academics?
I liked how the teachers really took the time to get to know the students. I found myself talking to my teachers and relating to them as I would with my mother. Being at boarding school can be a little disconcerting because you're not with your parents. the teachers were so understanding though and I really appreciated their input. They always watched out for us.
2.) What did you like least about the academics in your school?
The academics were very difficult, but in the long run I think that the difficulty will prove beneficial. The teachers are very hard, especially on English papers. The workload was a lot as well. With very demanding arts classes at a performing arts boarding school the homework load sometimes was out of control and I found it difficult to balance the homework with my dance classes.
Athletics:
1.) What did you like best about your school’s athletics?
The Walnut HIll school doesn't offer athletics
2.) What did you like least about the athletics in your school?
THe Walntu HIll School doesn't offer athletics.
Art, Music, and Theatre:
1.) What did you like best about your school’s art program?
The arts program is what Walnut HIll does best. I loved how evey student who goes to the school has a passion for the arts. They love and support each other and their interests in arts from creative writing to ballet.
2.) What did you like least about your school’s art program?
The arts program was very demanding. Classes would start after school around 2 and end around 6 with rehearsal sometimes after that. It was difficult to balance the arts classes with the workloads.
Extracurricular Opportunities:
1.) What did you like most about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?
The leadership students were really exceptional. They were outgoing and appreciative. They organized activities that everyone could do like Hiking, Skiing, or apple picking.
2.) What did you like least about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?
Sometimes the activities fell on days that you would have rehearsal for your arts classes and you couldn't go. The scheduling was a little difficult.
Dorm Life:
1.) What was the best thing about dorm life in your school?
Everyone was friends. If you needed a sweater to match your awesome new plaid pants you could just knock on the door of the person next to you. It was never hurt and everyone loved your company.
2.) What did you like least about dorm life?
It was loud sometimes late at night and it's always difficult to share a bathroom.
Dining:
1.) What was the best thing about your dining arrangements?
The timing was great. No matter, what you could always eat when you were hungry.
2.) What did you like least about your dining arrangements?
The food sometimes wasn't very good. I found they made pasta quite often and if you don't like pasta then life's rough at the Walnut Hill school.
Social and Town Life:
1.) How welcome did you feel by the other students when you first arrived at the school
Everyone fits in at Walnut Hill. Even if you have blue hair people think that's awesome and ask you how you did it! The students were very welcoming when you first arrive and they help you bring your stuff up to your rooms and show you around so you feel a little less tense about leaving home.
2.) Describe the level of diversity and integration of students in your school:
The school is quite diverse. Although the asians tend to stay together and it's not very well integrated.
3.) Describe typical fun activities you did on a weekend:
My friends and I would always take the T (commuter train) into Boston. It's only about a 20 minute train ride. We would shop and sometimes go to the museums.
4.) What was the town like?
Yes!! Natick Center is about a 10 minute walk and there's always stuff to do. There's ice cream and a Dunkin Dounuts as well as an outstanding library. Also, you can take a short taxi ride to the mall of the movies. On the weekends the school offers a shuttle to the movies and the mall.
