Reflections and Advice:

1.)  What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?

Becoming Christian. a series of autrocities in my life paired with a really strong Christian friend at Deerfield led me to renewing my faith and deciding to live for God

2.)  What would you have done differently during your boarding school experience?

i wish i had not been so hard on myself. there are so many pressures that boarding school put on you, and going in with a serious over-achieving attitude really ruined parts of my first year there.

3.)  What would you never want to change about your school?

the traditions

4.)  What things could be improved about your school?

Deerfield would be better if there were less emphasis on going to a "top ten" college

5.)  Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?

Be a part of the traditions when you get there rather than trying to tear them down for "not being cool". the upperclassmen find the traditions to be unifying, worthwhile, and fun; alums look back on them with incredibly strong ties ot the school. it only helps your experience to "be cool" in the traditions themselves: the Choate Day bonfires, the school colours, protecting The Seal, etc.

Academics:

1.) What did you like best about your school’s academics?

small class sizes, availability of teachers: almost all teachers lived on campus, wide variety of class selection: several different science options, language offerings, AP courses, etc

2.) What did you like least about the academics in your school?

the teachers hired straight out of undergraduate studies didn't have enough experience or age difference from the students they were teaching: 22 year olds fresh from college teaching 18 year old seniors and 19 year old post-grads.

Athletics:

1.) What did you like best about your school’s athletics?

intense school spirit: everyone supported the athletic teams whether or not they were involved, although most students were involved. the facilities and number of sports available for men and women were great as well.

2.) What did you like least about the athletics in your school?

some of the sports were coached by teachers who were fulfilling their coaching requirement, rather than actually coaching a sport they knew anything about. and so some of the smaller teams had coaches who knew little or nothing about the sport they were assigned to.

Art, Music, and Theatre:

1.) What did you like best about your school’s art program?

the variety of artistic outlets available

2.) What did you like least about your school’s art program?

very limited faculty: only one dance teacher, one theatre teacher, and one art teacher: this led to a narrow-minded approach to the arts rather than getting a diversity of views and expertise

Extracurricular Opportunities:

1.) What did you like most about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?

the variety of opportunities and emphasis on being involved in a number of things.

2.) What did you like least about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?

lack of time allowed for exploring deeply the extra curricular activities with so much homework and stresses on academics

Dorm Life:

1.) What was the best thing about dorm life in your school?

reasonable curfews, rooms for girls were all singles

2.) What did you like least about dorm life?

strict opposite-sex visitation rules

Dining:

1.) What was the best thing about your dining arrangements?

really good food- a bakery in the kitchen : amazing bread and desserts

2.) What did you like least about your dining arrangements?

inflexibility in hours

Social and Town Life:

1.) How welcome did you feel by the other students when you first arrived at the school?

i felt really welcome, although it wasn't too hard since my brother was a tri-varsity senior.

2.) Describe the level of diversity and integration of students in your school:

i'm white, so maybe i'm not as good at noticing things like this, but i thought there was a pretty diverse group of students at Deerfield. a lot of my friends were minorities, so i guess that says something good. right?

3.) Describe typical fun activities you did on a weekend:

well sports were everyone's lives on Saturdays, whether they were watching or participating in an athletic event. weekend evenings were not exciting though because we were in the middle of no where.

4.) What was the town like?

there wasn't much surrounding town. the movie theatre was small and there wasn't much to do except go to a few different restaurants.
