This past September, the Mills Pond House sponsored a poetry reading by the Oberon Foundation which featured the work of several Knox School poets. The Foundation, a patron of multiple artistic endeavors, publishes a yearly anthology of poems by poets from across the nation. In its 8th year, the Foundation decided to publish, for the first time, poetry by area high school students. Of the poems chosen for publication there were two by Knox students. One by graduate Bianca Gracie ’09 and the other by Kat Barry ‘10. English Dept. Chairperson Linda Pack Butler also had a poem published. Both Ms. Barry and Ms. Butler read their works at the Mills Pond House gathering. A light reception followed the readings. ...hide

Soccer team wins Championship! The Knox boys soccer team showed much improvement since last year.  We made it through the season tied for second place.  Knox played a home game to host the semifinals against Martin Luther and prevailed with a score of 4 to 1.  Portledge hosted the finals round and Knox won with a score of 1 to 0.  The Knox soccer team was made up of twenty four day and boarding students.  Fifteen of the players were returning from last year and were eager to start the season as soon as possible.    This year we started with a new goalie, Ji Woo Lee, who unfortunately got injured during practice after the first game and was out for the rest of the season.  Collin Lee arrived late but filled the goalie spot nicely.  He was ready to be goalie since the day he arrived, bringing his own pair of goalie gloves and a number 1 goalie shirt.  Strong offensive players complimented the an aggressive goalie..  David Cho, Keith Cho, Jib Hwang, Jay Kim and Sean Jung were among Long Islands point and assist top 25 leaders.   The Knox School’s record this year was 5 wins, 3 losses and 1 tie.  2 of the 3 losses were to Our Savior New American, a Division 1 Team.  The other loss came as a hard defeat to Lexington early in the season.  Throughout the season the Knox soccer players fought hard and outscored their opponents by a score of 45 to 15 overall.  The final game against Lexington was held on a sunny and cool October afternoon.  Throughout most of the game the score remained tied at zero.  Ryan Shin was able to break through the defense and score the winning goal.  With only three of the players being seniors, the future of Knox’s boys soccer team looks promising. ...hide

The Class of 2009 Senior Projects were very well executed. Students maintained daily online journals or blogs, submitting 10 blogs over the course of their project or internship. The online journals provided fellow project participants, advisors and committee members with the opportunity to keep up with the projects, offer comments, pose questions, and provide support to the project participants. It was an exciting and often inspiring two weeks as we followed the progress of our seniors. Upon their return, the entire school community watched their final PowerPoint presentations. Two projects were exemplary and recognized at the Upper School Academic and Character Awards Ceremony: Alexandra Burst’s project at Red Hills Provincial Dining and Sheriffa Osman’s project at the Mygoma Orphanage in the Sudan. ...hide

The Knox School is proud to have become a part of the National Honor Society! Knox opened a National Honor Society Chapter named “Semper ad Lucem” and has inducted its first two members. Jessica Wen ’10 was the first student to participate in the induction ceremony. Jason Zhou ’09 was the other student to be inducted into the Semper ad Lucem Chapter of the National Honor Society, but he could not participate in the ceremony because he was in the middle of his senior project. Criteria to become a member of this elite society is rigorous. A student must earn academic honors as well as demonstrate strong moral character. The school looks forward to watching this society grow in the coming years. ...hide

The 2009 Knox International Fair was held on April 21st and was a wonderful success. The event began with a talent show in the Bancroft Phinney Gymnasium, with many diverse acts performed by students and faculty. Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Haitian songs were sung by groups, duets, a trio and soloists. Students from French classes performed an original skit, and two students, Angel Valdes (’12) and Macarena Vera Esquiva (’09) performed a traditional Spanish dance from Seville. In addition, there was an impressive demonstration by the Tae Kwon Do club, choreographed and led by Ryan Shin (’10), and William Zhu performed a nunchucks routine. Finally, faculty member Sylvie Aristilde and the Fashion Club dazzled the audience with a fashion show of international outfits from countries such as Japan, Korea, China, Spain, Tanzania, Nigeria, Ghana, and Sudan. The second half of the International Fair was held in Senior Tuck, where display booths, exhibits and lots of food awaited everyone. Students learned about many different cultures from around the world, and had the chance to practice calligraphy, get a Sudanese hemp tattoo, taste delicious, spicy Korean food, try a French crepe, join a soccer juggling contest, and drink traditional Chinese tea. Parents and students prepared food from countries such as Austria, Turkey, Mexico, Sweden, Korea, China, Israel, Spain, Jamaica, Cuba, Guyana, Puerto Rico and France. ...hide

The Photography classes’ works were recently exhibited at foto foto Gallery located at 372 New York Avenue in Huntington. The show ran May 1-31, 2009 and featured thirty-three of the student’s images. Students that participated in the exhibit were Portfolio Photography students John Boyd ’09, Cameron Gilhooley ’09, Kara Elwood ’09, Channell Campbell ’09 and Frank Sohn ’09. These seniors are also advanced students completing their third year in Photography. Other photographs featured in the show were by Photography I students who are also seniors: Kelvin Kong ’09, Lauren Biello ’09 and Alex Burst ’09. Sara Davis ’12 and William Zhu ’11 who are one semester Introductory Photography students were also represented. The reception held on Sat. May 2nd, 2009 was well attended by the community as well as many local professors from many Long Island colleges. Seven images were purchased the night of the reception. The exhibit will also travel back to The Knox School where it will be hung alongside Impressionist paintings from Ms. Staebler’s Studio Art classes for graduation week, June 1-7, 2009. ...hide

Friday, April 10th 6:00 am came up suddenly.  Six sleepy Knox students arrived at the stables, helped load the horses (Keebler, Quincy and Duncan) and we all headed to Thomas School of Horsemanship in Huntington for the annual Junior Olympics.  Brianne Sullivan ’09, Jessica Wen ’10 and Gabby Wessler ’11 prepared to ride, and just as importantly, DJ Nam ’10 (our alternate), Matt Behar ’12 and Lauren Biello ’09 became groomers, videographers, photographers and food and confidence dispensers. Although overcast, the weather was good.  We competed in 9 classes and won 3 second place ribbons and 3 fifth place ribbons.  Our "waterloo" were forgotten courses.  Everyone came home with 2 ribbons each, competing with 24 other riders from across Long Island.  Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Smith were very proud of all our Knox students with regard to their team spirit, helpfulness and support of one another.  Mistakes were accepted as just a part of life and were always met with a "you'll do better next time" attitude.  We were proud of them as examples of what Knox expects from them as young adults and from a riding point of view, they were definately competitive. This was Bri Sullivan’s ’09 and Lauren Biello's ’09 last Junior Olympic experience as they are Seniors. We, at the barn, will miss them next fall.  P.S. Knox's equestrians are looking forward to spring.  We are very lucky to have our inside track (with its new sand and rubber footing) for bad weather, but we can't wait to get outside!  We have a lot of work to do......Junior Olympics on April 10th and our Spring Musical Ride for Graduation Weekend.  Knox riders have attended the Junior Olympics for many decades.  It is a competition of three member teams from all over Long Island and involves jumping, speed and accuracy.  The following students are candidates : Brianne Sullivan, Gabby Wessler, Jessica Wen, DJ Nam and Victor Wu.  Of course, don't forget their equine partners: Duncan, Seeker, Keebler, and Quincy.  Helping them on the ground is Ceclia Wang, Matt Behar and Lauren Biello. Most of all, we have fun cheering on the riders.  Anyone interested in attending please contact Mrs. Moore or Mrs. Smith. Once we get past the "J.O.'s" we start to put together our Spring Musical Ride.  It involves any Spring rider who wishes to participate.  Candidates are: Michelle Chiang, Macarena Vera, Alex Horn, Ceclia Wang, Melissa Fenik, Jessica Wen, Brianne Sullivan, Gabby Wessler, DJ Nam, Matt Behar, Lauren Biello and Victor Wu. Three distinguished students from Ms. Colombraro’s Portfolio Photography class have been chosen to exhibit their images at The Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design this winter. John Boyd, Kara Elwood and Cameron Gilhooley all seniors at The Knox School submitted photographs in December to The Drexel University High School Photography Contest. The student’s matted silver gelatin prints represent works from infra-red projects, landscapes and portraits all photographed in 2008. John Boyd and Kara Elwood are in their third year of Photography having completed Photo I and Photo II. They have just recently finished their photography portfolios which were submitted with their college applications. Ms. Elwood is planning on majoring in photography in the fall. Cameron Gilhooley is presently finishing his second year of photography at The Knox School and has also submitted his portfolio to several colleges. The photography students are enthusiastic about their accomplishment. “I am very excited to be accepted into the college art show. Anytime I get to exhibit my work it brings me happiness”, said John Boyd. The juried contest received over 3,100 entries from all over the country making judging exceptionally difficult. The Knox student photos represent 125 of these selected works which will be exhibited in the Photography Gallery at the north east corner of Arch and 33rd Streets in Philadelphia. The exhibit will run from January 31 to February 28th, 2009. A public opening reception will be held on Saturday, January 31st from 1-3pm. On February 12th MUN Delegates boarded the bus to Georgetown, for the 45th Annual North American Invitational Model United Nations Conference. The conference was especially well organized by the Georgetown International Relations Association with engaging simulations and social programs. Nearly 3000 student from all over the country participated in NAIMUN as well as delegations from China, Puerto Rico and South America. KMUN Delegates met in the following committees: DISEC, Jay Kim and Frank Sohn; SOCHUM, DJ Nam and Elijah Kim; World Food Prices, Kelvin Kong. Edward Zhang and John Boyd; World Health Organization, Jamie Rose Kim and Jun Baek; World bank, Wayne Jang and David Cho; UN Committee on the Status of Women, Emily Gladstein; UN Commission on Sustainable Development, Kelvin Lee, Caricom, Collin Lee; International Committee on the Red Cross, Bianca Gracie and OAU, Jib Hwang. KMUN represented Botswana, People’s Republic of the Congo, Bermuda and Somalia. The student’s many hours of hard work, researching their countries and topics as well as writing position papers and resolutions paid off in debating and caucusing in their respective committee sessions. Knox Alums Ted Park’07, Min Soo Lee’08 and Seung Gon Baek stopped by from George Washington University and American University to visit the group. This past February, the English Department at Knox hosted a school-wide poetry contest. Students had to memorize and recite poems with a minimum of 8 lines before a panel of judges and the entire school community. The panel of four judges included published poet and author, Claire Nicholas White and Smithtown Librarian, Karen Kostner. Sharon Lawrence, Assistant Head of School, and Janice Zingale, Director of Alumni Affairs, also judged the contest. Of the final 10 contestants, the grand-prize winner was 9th grader Taylour Dickerson who recited Maya Angelou's 60-line poem, "Phenomenal Woman." Sophomore Skyler Blackwood took second place, also reciting an Angelou poem, while Kat Barry, a senior, took third place with a poem by Carl Sandburg. Other contestants included seniors John Boyd and Yuri Tago as well as underclassmen, Emily Gladstein, Matt Kim, Jason Kim, Nick Reina and Cecelia Wang. All the poems were the personal choices of the students. Poets included in the contest ranged from Robert Frost and Nicki Giovanni to to William Shakespeare and Tagore. Poetry Out Loud is a program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts as well as the National Council for Teachers of English. The finalists for the Knox contest came out of individual classroom contests in which students in every single grade memorized and recited poems with a minimum of 8 lines from the Poetry Out Loud online anthology.
