School Notes:
- ACADEMICS: Ecole d'Humanité offers both Swiss and American academic programs. The American Program leads to a High School Diploma and includes preparation for the College Board SAT exams, for which the Ecole is an official testing center. Students can also prepare for exams leading to the AP International Diploma and entrance to universities around the world. Colleges attended by recent Ecole graduates include: Bard, Bennington, Boston Conservatory, Brown, Colorado College, Dartmouth, New York University, Oberlin, Reed, Sarah Lawrence, University of Chicago, University of Michigan, and the universities of Southampton, RIchmond, and Bristol in England.
- HOLISTIC APPROACH: We strive to educate the whole person, emphasizing academic excellence, practical skills and social awareness. We encourage both individual creativity and a sense of responsibility for the community, and provide a culturally diverse setting in which open minds and tolerant spirits can develop and flourish.
- EVALUATION: Students are not “marked” with grades, but instead receive feedback from their teachers based on their papers, tests, quizzes, and oral presentations. They assess their own work in regular written reflections that help them come to see their education as primarily their own responsibility.
- AFTERNOON PROGRAM: To balance the intensive academic program in the morning, students devote their afternoons to the arts, sports, and practical work, selecting from some eighty possible courses. Blacksmithing, skiing or snowboarding, graphic design studio courses, woodworking, painting, pottery, rock-climbing, the annual Shakespeare production, French theater, classical, jazz, folk, and pop music ensembles, instrumental and voice lessons, gardening, and animal husbandry are just a few of the fields students can choose to explore and then concentrate on in their afternoons.
- ECOLE FAMILY SYSTEM: Our students are at home in fifteen "Ecole families." Each family is headed by two or three teachers and lives in one of the school’s houses or chalets. Families eat together in the common dining hall. One evening a week they spend time together playing games, cooking, or working on projects. Living in a mixed group including students of both sexes and various ages and cultures helps everyone to see beyond stereotypes and to appreciate individual differences. The comfortable atmosphere in the families helps new students feel at home within a short period of time. Teachers take particular interest in the students in their family, and are concerned with their total development on a day-to-day basis.
- ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT: Ecole d'Humanité is committed to realizing a simple, environmentally responsible lifestyle. By strictly limiting both material and electronic consumerism we attempt to create a space where students can engage directly and honestly with other people, with our common cultural heritage, and with the natural world, and where they are free to discover and explore their own unique strengths and passions. Students involved in the Ecole-Logical Project are exploring and demonstrating ways to live and learn sustainably in the Ecole d’Humanité. Our goal is to become a model sustainable school. Our three-pronged approach includes both theory and practice: hands-on projects, environmental education, and connecting with the local community. Ecole-Logical was the proud winner of the 2009 Helmutt-Becker-Fond from the German Association of Country Boarding Schools (Landerziehungsheime) for innovative school projects. We are overjoyed by this recognition of everyone’s hard work, and have used the 3000 euros of prize money toward more student-led ecological projects.

5 More Schools and Their Founders
A private school in its infancy is quite different from the mature community it becomes over time. I wonder what the founders of these five schools would think about them today. I bet they would be very proud of their creations.
