  SHAWNIGAN DELEGATE SHINES AT MCGILL MODEL UN. Shawnigan's Johnny B. was awarded a 'Book Prize' for his skill and contribution in the Security Council at the recent McGill University's Secondary Schools' United Nations Symposium (SSUNS). The SSUNS conference is one of Canada's, if not the western hemisphere's, most prestigious Model United Nations conference, hosting approximately 1,300 high school students from across North America. Johnny was a member of the United Nations Security Council as a delegate for Columbia. The primary focus for his delegation was to strategize plans for stabilizing post-revolution Egypt. An additional area of debate was the biological and chemical weaponry in the People's Republic of Korea. SSUNS is first and foremost a friendly and stimulating environment in which delegates can freely exchange ideas by debating, discussing and reaching agreement on all manner of international issues. Awards at SSUNS are bestowed upon those delegates whose behaviour at the conference enriches the learning of their peers to an exceptional degree. Johnny was awarded a 'Book Prize' by his committee directors (McGill undergraduates), who wished to recognize his enthusiastic and dynamic participation in the Security Council. The grade 12 student is overwhelmed by the official recognition he received at SUNSS. "To go up and accept an award in a room of 1,300 people was pretty awesome. The best part, however, was more that I was winning an award for Shawnigan. It was awesome to bring home something that we as a School and as a delegation can be proud of. And I wouldn't have received the award if it wasn't for the support and drive of our teachers Mr. Klassen or Mrs. Coy making sure I was well-prepared.   THE 9TH INTERNATIONAL WEEK at Shawnigan Lake School has officially come to a close. For one exciting, energetic week Shawnigan celebrated multiculturalism and over 40 countries of the world with its 9th International Week Festival. The week of festivities kicked-off with the Opening Ceremony featuring flags from 42 countries and messages of welcome in many different languages. Highlights included the fabulous Food Fair where countries showcased indigenous cuisine; the Multi-Faith Chapel Service with prayers and readings in different languages from different faiths and a candlelight vigil with the Prayer for World Peace; the afternoon of international sports; and a mix of games and activities workshops attended by the entire student body to complement a fun-filled week of celebration and appreciation. The highly anticipated International Week Stage Show performances on the final night lived up to expectations with 14 diverse, imaginative, cultural acts. From Welsh singing to Philippine Tinikling, Japanese martial arts, Highland Dance, South African gum boot dancing and German Après-ski fun, each country brought the essence of their cultural background to the stage. The energy from the many performers, staff included, and the enthusiastic appreciation from the crowd made for a perfect evening of festivities. On the final day the Shawnigan Lake School community gathered in Chapel for a final multi-faith service to officially close what was an enjoyable and exciting week of multiculturalism. ...hide

  SHAWNIGAN FIELD HOCKEY PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONS The Senior Girls Field Hockey Team wrote history over the mid-term break and it had nothing to do with class work. The 21 player squad is the first Shawnigan field hockey team to bring home the elusive “blue banner” as AA Provincial Champions. “I’m really proud of our girls because I feel that they really deserve this big win since they worked so hard together for over 15 months and became such a powerful group of young, inspired and committed athletes,“ stated Director of Field Hockey and coach Benjamin Koepp. After confidently securing a provincial berth as Island Champions, the Shawnigan squad also snagged the #1 seed for the Provincial championships based on their undefeated 24-3-1 season record. The girls left no doubt to their top ranking by marching through pool play, quarter finals and semi-finals with a total tally of 29 goals and conceding only 1 against. As anticipated the squad faced off against AA rivals and defending 2010 champions Collingwood. Having already defeated the Collingwood team at their first meeting during the UBC Tier I tournament, the Shawnigan squad knew that the pressure was on for a repeat performance and that the Collingwood players would be on fire to revenge their previous 2-5 loss. The match was physical with dynamic running from both teams and plenty of action in the offensive zones. Shawnigan drew first blood off of a rebound and notched a second goal off of a tip late in the second half to secure the victory. ...hide

  Create: Bonding together to fight cancer! The uniform at Shawnigan Lake School usually consists of business attire and tidy classroom dress, but a few times over the past month we have suited up in running shoes and specially designed t-shirts to put our full support behind many fundraising initiatives for the Canadian Cancer Society. The wave of support started with the annual Terry Fox run around campus and the traditional passing back of the Terry Fox jersey. The shirt starts with an appointed lead runner and moves steadily through each participant, ending in the hands of the final runner over the finish line; symbolically uniting our School community in the fight against cancer. The next surge in our efforts consisted of more than 230 Shawnigan students and staff lacing up their runners to race, run, jog, walk and stroll in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation at the Run for the Cure in downtown Victoria. The crest of support peaked when Cops for Cancer rolled onto campus at 9:33 am on October 5th. The 23 bikers pedaling across Vancouver Island to support children with cancer were greeted by the entire school in their new "word shirts", which were sold to support the cause. This year's word was defined by Shawnigan alum and long-time, inspiring English teacher Jay Connolly, "Create: to bring (something) into existence: as in art, as in hope, as in love. To cause (something) to happen as a result of one's actions; their commitment created new possibilities." In each individual way, we were all part of a quest to create something positive in the fight against cancer. Each stride taken on the long run is a step towards a cure. Each t-shirt sold is a research opportunity born. Each dollar donated in bake sales is another child at Camp Good Times and each head shaved is a generous donation to fundraising, generating positive energy and laughter.
