Reflections and Advice:

1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
NYMA is one of the few military-style college preparatory boarding schools left in the United States. What sets it apart is its structured military leadership model that fosters discipline, accountability, and character development. Cadets wear uniforms daily, follow a chain of command, and are immersed in a culture that emphasizes leadership and responsibility from day one. The campus itself is historic and overlooks the Hudson River, offering a scenic and reflective environment for growth.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
The proudest moment was leading the cadet band during parade. NYMA taught me how to lead under pressure, stay resilient, and hold myself accountable. I arrived unsure and left confident. My advice? Buy into the system early—it’s designed to build you up, not break you down.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
I would have gotten involved in leadership opportunities sooner. Advice to new cadets: don’t wait to be asked—step up. NYMA rewards initiative.
4.) What did you like most about your school?
The transformation. You start one way and emerge stronger, smarter, and more confident. The structure, the brotherhood/sisterhood, and the leadership opportunities are unmatched.
5.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
Don't take everything at face value. The campus is in rough shape but is on the cusp of a major renovation. See past the crumbling facade and see what the potential is for you.

Academics:

1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?
NYMA offers a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum with small class sizes and personalized instruction. Advanced Placement (AP) and honors courses are available. The best aspect is how academics are interwoven with character development—students are held to high standards of integrity and accountability in the classroom.

Athletics:

1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?
Athletics are a core part of cadet life. Every student participates, promoting physical fitness and teamwork. What stands out most is how athletics reinforce leadership under pressure and discipline—every practice feels like mission prep. The sense of team and camaraderie is unmatched. I played lacrosse and football at NYMA--and I can honestly say both experiences left an indelible mark on me.

Art, Music, and Theatre:

1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?
NYMA has offered in visual art and music electives in the past, with student participation in band, choir, and theatrical performances. The cadet band plays at parades and ceremonies, connecting creativity with tradition. What stands out most is the integration of performance into school pride and ceremonial events. Currently, the band and theater programs are on hiatus.

Extracurricular Opportunities:

1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?
Clubs include Student Government, National Honor Society, MUN (past), and community service organizations. Volunteer efforts often support veterans or the local community. What I appreciated most was the ability to lead even as a younger student—it’s a place where initiative is noticed and rewarded.

Dorm Life:

1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?
Dormitories are organized by company (military units), fostering peer leadership and accountability. Cadets have daily responsibilities like room inspections, making beds, and maintaining cleanliness. What I liked most was the camaraderie—your dorm becomes your second family.

Dining:

1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.
Cadets eat together in the mess hall during scheduled meal times. Meals are structured, and cadets eat in uniform. The best part? The sense of order and the shared space where cadets from all grades eat together, allowing for mentorship and peer bonding.

Social and Town Life:

1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.
Located in Cornwall-on-Hudson, NYMA is surrounded by the natural beauty of the Hudson Valley. The proximity to West Point, NYC, and outdoor trails makes it a unique blend of accessibility and isolation—perfect for focus and reflection.
2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?
While highly structured, cadet social life includes weekend activities, athletic events, and off-campus trips. The Ring Hop and Military Ball are highlights. What I enjoyed most was the shared experience—social bonds are deep because you go through everything together.
