Reflections and Advice:
1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
Coming from Grande Prairie, the idea of boarding school was a big leap. But Brentwood just worked as it was structured, but not rigid. What really stood out to me was how student leadership was everywhere whether in clubs, SAC, or just day-to-day house life. You weren’t just told what to do rather you were expected to lead.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
Confidence. I went from nervous newbie to someone who ran her own Regatta booth and spoke at Grad. I’d tell new students to say yes more often. Try out for that team, sign up for that club even if you’re scared.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
Nothing really except I would’ve gotten involved sooner. In Grade 10, I was shy about putting myself out there, especially coming from a small town. I didn’t think I had what it took to lead. Turns out, I just needed to take that first step and by Grade 12, I was leading fundraisers and events like it was second nature. Show up. Say yes to things. The school’s full of opportunities, but no one’s going to drag you into them. You’ve got to walk through the door yourself.
4.) What did you like most about your school?
I liked the independence. Brentwood trusted us to lead, to try, to fail, and figure things out. Whether it was running a booth at Regatta or organizing a dorm event, we were treated like young adults, not just students. That level of trust pushed me to step up and realize what I’m capable of. I left Brentwood knowing I could handle whatever comes next.
5.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
If you're coming to Brentwood: Mack/Ellis is the house to beat (we won Interhouse!). And don’t leave without trying the honey garlic chicken stir fry at lunch.
Academics:
1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?
The classes weren’t easy especially Pre-Calc 12 but the support was incredible. Mr. Burton was my go-to for anything business-related. He pushed me to apply to case competitions and even helped review my UCalgary scholarship essays. The small class sizes made a big difference, teachers knew when you were zoning out, and they pulled you back in.
Athletics:
1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?
Basketball was a huge part of my life. We made it to Provincials and had the most amazing coach — Coach Gage. He expected a lot, but also had our backs. The facilities were unreal: full-size gym, weight room, even yoga rooms for recovery. And because athletics are mandatory, you always feel active, no matter your level.
Art, Music, and Theatre:
1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?
I wasn’t super involved in the arts, but I had friends in the musical and I loved supporting them. You could see how much pride people took in the productions. It was cool how the school gave arts and sports the same level of energy and respect.
Extracurricular Opportunities:
1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?
What I loved most was the sheer range. From mental health conferences to climate activism to financial literacy workshops you could try everything. I joined the Women’s Society in Grade 12 and we helped organize Kindness Week and a clothing swap. It was empowering to lead something that made a real impact.
Dorm Life:
1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?
Whittall House was like my second home. Shared rooms meant always having someone to chat with, and our houseparent Ms. Gage made the best hot chocolate. We had movie nights, spa nights, it wasn’t just a place to sleep. It was where I felt grounded.
Dining:
1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.
Honestly? I was impressed. Lots of healthy options, themed meals during events, and the salad bar was stacked. My go-to snack: butter chicken wrap. So good.
Social and Town Life:
1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.
Mill Bay itself is small, but you don’t really miss city life. We had access to Duncan and Victoria on weekends, and the beach is steps away. It’s quiet but in a good way well at least for me.
2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?
Lots of structured events (Snowball, Spirit Week), but also impromptu ones. My best memories were hanging out in the common room with a board game or during those chaotic Air Band rehearsals.
