About the Author:

Years Attended Boarding School:
2006-2009
Sports and Activities:
I wrestled and ran cross-country for 3 years. I was the cadet commander of the Civil Air Patrol Squadron on campus. I was a first lieutenant in JROTC there.
College Enrolled:
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
Home Town, State:
Charlotte, NC

Reflections and Advice:

1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
This is a Military style boarding school. It has structure and discipline. There are mandatory study hours. Due to the small class sizes, I learned better.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
Becoming a first lieutenant. It gave me the opportunity to hone my leadership skills and build confidence in myself. Which has definitely helped me in college. Due to the great teaching at CMA, I acquired 6 gold stars for academic excellence, and many other awards. I have changed in many ways. When I first came, I was a sophomore and had a 2.9 GPA. When I left I had around a 4.7 GPA. I have also gained invaluable leadership and confidence, a skill and attribute that are very hard to come by.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
I would of done nothing differently when I first arrived. I thought to myself, "I'm here, there is nothing I can do about it, so I might as well make the best of it." The only thing I would say to a future student is this- When things get hard or you think you can't make/handle it, try your best because senior year will come faster than you think, and doing your best is always worth it.
4.) What did you like most about your school?
I liked most that I made life-long friends, acquired a top-notch education, and overall had a unforgettable experience that I will never forget.
5.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
This school might seem like the wrong place for you(student), at the time. But stick in there, this school was right for me and many others.

Academics:

1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?
What I liked most about the academics was how much I learned. The teachers will answer questions, and if possible stay after class to help. There was a fair bit of homework, but mandatory study hours ensured that it was done.

Athletics:

1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?
The athletic program at the school has a wide variety of sports; especially considering how small the school is. Most of the teams have a "no cut" policy. This is great if you are just starting out in the sport and want to learn. Most of out teams are extremely competitive. In 2009 the Varsity Football team was state champions in their division.

Art, Music, and Theatre:

1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?
I was not involved in the school band. So I have no opinion.

Extracurricular Opportunities:

1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?
There are many extracurricular activities at the school. Civil Air Patrol, Key-Club, and Boy Scouts are just a few. I liked that it was very easy to get involved in any of the activities.

Dorm Life:

1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?
I liked that you could, for the most part, choose your roommate.

Dining:

1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.
The meals are served "Home style." There was assigned seating, the food was good, especially for a cafeteria. We had different dishes every day. We eat 3 times a day, every day.

Social and Town Life:

1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.
The town is located in Camden, which is a very nice place. While I was at school there, I got the opportunity to volunteer at a polo match in Camden.
2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?
During free time, I had the opportunity to visit my friends in school.
