Reflections and Advice:
1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
Brentwood is unique compared to other schools because it has strong emphasis on the tripod system, academics, arts, and athletics are equally valued. For me, rowing became a huge part of my identity here, but I was also encouraged to explore courses and opportunities outside of the boathouse. Another unique part of Brentwood is its seaside campus. Waking up to the ocean every day and launching our boats from campus gave me a perspective on balance and beauty that I don’t think I could’ve found anywhere else.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
The best thing that happened to me at Brentwood was discovering my love for rowing and having it open doors for me, including the opportunity to row at the University of Pennsylvania. Brentwood gave me confidence, resilience, and friendships that will last a lifetime.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
If I could change one thing, it would be to remind myself earlier not to stress so much about being perfect because there’s so much support around you if you let yourself lean into it. My advice for incoming students would be shape your experience by the little actions and commitments because they do more than you realize.
4.) What did you like most about your school?
What I loved most about Brentwood was its people and that is my teammates, my teachers, and my friends from all over the world. The campus, the programs, and the opportunities are incredible, but it’s the relationships that made it unforgettable.
5.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
If you’re visiting Brentwood, don’t miss sitting by the docks at sunset, it’s one of the most peaceful and beautiful spots on campus. Also, make sure to try the cookies at the dining hall, they were always a highlight after a long day. And if you’re looking for a dorm recommendation, my house gave me a family away from home, Allard, I couldn’t have asked for a better support system.
Academics:
1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?
The academics at Brentwood were rigorous but supportive. I loved how teachers like Ms. Livingston (English) or Mr. Wismer (Science) made lessons feel alive and encouraged us to think critically instead of just memorizing content. The IB curriculum pushed me out of my comfort zone at times, but it also prepared me really well for university. What stood out the most was how approachable the teachers were. I never felt like I had to struggle on my own—there was always someone willing to sit down and walk me through concepts.
Athletics:
1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?
Rowing at Brentwood shaped me in ways I can hardly describe. The facilities are world-class no doubt, the boathouse on the ocean, the gym, and the coaching staff make it such a professional environment. Coach Carr and my teammates pushed me to levels I didn’t know I could reach, both physically and mentally. Competing at regattas, representing Brentwood, and feeling the entire school cheer for you is unforgettable. Rowing also gave me structure, a sense of accountability, and the joy of being part of something bigger than myself.
Art, Music, and Theatre:
1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?
Even though I wasn’t heavily involved in the arts, I admired how strong the program was at Brentwood. Friends of mine performed in plays or worked in the visual arts studios, and their passion was inspiring. I always appreciated how Brentwood encouraged us, even those of us focused on sports, to go watch performances or explore creativity in some way. It added a balance to the school that made the community richer.
Extracurricular Opportunities:
1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?
Beyond rowing, I took part in volunteer opportunities, like helping with the Regatta and mentoring younger students. Brentwood also has clubs for everything. One of my favorite memories is Spirit Week, it wasn’t an “official” club, but it brought the whole school together in a way that reminded us we were part of something special.
Dorm Life:
1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?
Dorm life was a mix of fun and growth. Living with people from all over the world was eye-opening as I got to learn about cultures I had never experienced before. My houseparent was like a second parent to me, always checking in and making sure we were balanced between work, rest, and play. Late-night study sessions in the common room, celebrating birthdays together, or just laughing after a tough day. Those are the moments that made Brentwood feel like home.
Dining:
1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.
The dining hall at Brentwood was such a community hub. I always appreciated the variety of food (especially the salmon nights!) and the fact that the staff knew us by name. Sitting down for meals wasn’t just about eating but it was about connecting with people, whether it was your friends, teachers, or even someone from a different grade you didn’t know that well before.
Social and Town Life:
1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.
Mill Bay is a small town, but that’s part of its charm. Trips into town for coffee runs or snacks with friends became small adventures. I also loved how close we were to Victoria for when we needed a bigger city fix, but honestly, campus life kept us so busy that we didn’t often feel the need to leave.
2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?
Social life at Brentwood was vibrant and almost always packed. From house events to dances, to spontaneous gatherings by the ocean, there was always something happening. I especially loved how boarding life created such close bonds such that we weren’t just classmates but we were family.

Brentwood wasn’t just the place I went to school; it was the place that shaped how I see myself and the world. Coming from Vancouver, I thought I had a sense of community already, but. . .
If I had to describe what made Brentwood different from any other school, it was that sense of family woven through everything from the thrill of athletics to the calm moments watching the tide sway. . .
