Kent School - Review #1

One thing that really stood out to me at Kent was how much the school relies on discussion-based learning. At first it felt a bit intimidating, especially as an international student, but over time it made me way more confident speaking up in class.

The biggest thing that happened for me was honestly just adjusting and thriving in a completely different environment. I became way more independent, especially with managing time between academics, sports, and responsibilities

If I could go back, I would’ve worried less in the beginning and just gotten involved faster. I spent a bit too much time overthinking whether I was doing things “right” instead of just joining activities and meeting people early on. My advice to new students would be to say yes to things even if you’re unsure, especially in the first term, because that’s when you build your whole experience. Also, don’t isolate yourself in the dorm.

It’s structured enough that you stay disciplined, but still flexible enough that you can shape your own experience.

Just don’t spend your first weeks trying to be perfect or figuring everything out before you act. You learn Kent by living it, not planning it. Also, the snack bar chocolate chip cookies are underrated

The classes are small, so teachers actually know you and notice when you’re struggling or doing well. What I liked most was how interactive everything was.

Facilities were solid and the coaching was serious, but not in a toxic way. It felt more like they wanted you to improve as a person, not just win games.

I went to a few productions and they were actually really impressive for a high school. There were also music groups like choir and small ensembles that were open to students at different skill levels.

There were a lot of clubs, and they kept changing depending on what students wanted, which made things feel flexible. I was involved in debate and international student activities, and there were also things like community service groups, cultural clubs, and academic societies.

You’re living really close to everyone, so it gets social fast, but you also learn boundaries because you don’t have a lot of private space. It felt like a second family situation after a while.

The dining hall was decent and pretty structured, with set meal times, but there was enough variety that you didn’t get bored quickly. Some days were better than others, obviously, but overall there were always multiple options, including vegetarian choices.

It’s quiet, scenic, and surrounded by nature, so weekends often involved going on walks, hikes, or small trips with friends. If you wanted more activity, you usually had to travel a bit, but the school organized trips sometimes.

At first it felt intense because you can’t really “blend in,” but later it becomes nice because you always have people around. Friend groups formed through dorms, sports, and classes, so your social life naturally overlaps with everything else you’re doing. What I liked most was that it felt real and close-knit, not divided into too many separate groups.
