Reflections and Advice:
1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
We use the Harkness method, and our proximity to New York City allows us to take full advantage of both the Hudson Valley region of Westchester and the city itself as an extension of our classroom.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
One of the best things that happened to me was meeting international and domestic students from diverse backgrounds. My exposure to different cultures at Masters inspired me to study abroad for my entire junior year of college. Today, I consider myself a global citizen and continue to seek opportunities to connect with new and different people.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
If I could do anything differently, I would have taken advantage of more of the opportunities available here. Looking back, I wish I had tried theater for at least one season. Part of the high school experience is about exploring new interests in a supportive environment and building foundational skills — I just wish I had made more of that opportunity at the time.
4.) What did you like most about your school?
The community. I made some of my closest friends at Masters, and the dorm parents genuinely cared about me — both while I was there and even after I left.
5.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
Make the most of your time here, create plenty of memories, and if you'rere lucky enough to get into Ford dorm — know that it's s the best dorm on campus! (It was my home for all four years!)
Academics:
1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?
At The Masters School, learning is all about lively discussions, big ideas, and working together around the Harkness table. With amazing teachers and New York City just a short trip away, classes feel connected to the real world and full of exciting opportunities.
Athletics:
1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?
The Masters School offers a dynamic athletics program that emphasizes personal growth, teamwork, and sportsmanship, which ensures that students not only excel in their chosen sports but also carry forward the values and skills they acquire into other aspects of their lives.
Art, Music, and Theatre:
1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?
Unfortunately, I didn't 't' participate in the theater or music programs at Masters, but I did take ceramics for two years and loved the visual arts program. I know that, like the visual arts, the music and theater programs welcome students at any level — helping beginners build strong fundamentals and supporting more experienced students in taking their skills to the next level. Even if you'rere not directly involved in the arts, the whole community comes together to celebrate events like the play, the musical, and Great Gig — a true musical feat that brings everyone together.
Extracurricular Opportunities:
1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?
There are many opportunities to volunteer at Masters and many clubs that students can join and if there's a club that we don't have here (yet), you can create your own.
Dorm Life:
1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?
Dorming was the most meaningful part of my experience. It's rare to be able to say you live next door to your best friend, and I cherished that. While I had my own space, I also had 26 sisters who were there for me, and whom I could support in return. Looking back, I feel so grateful for the bond we shared, and for the memories I made with everyone in my dorm.
Dining:
1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.
The dining hall is fantastic, with so many options for all kinds of eaters. The best part, though, was discovering all the little hacks to make the experience even better!
Social and Town Life:
1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.
Dobbs Ferry is a small town with a variety of restaurants and stores, so students can easily find what they need — whether it's as cleaners, a bank, a pharmacy, or something else. It's just outside of campus, and if you can't find something in town, the Metro North station is within walking distance, offering a quick train ride into New York City.
2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?
It was amazing! People at Masters are really passionate about their education, but there's also so much fun to be had — whether it'ss in the dorms, at weekend activities, or during free time. I loved having the freedom to focus on what I needed while being surrounded by awesome people who became some of my closest friends.
