Reflections and Advice:

1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
This school is huge in developing personal growth. The faculty and staff are all involved and together, make a positive impact on each you man. Through perseverance, focus, encouragement, guidance, leadership, humility and patience, each cadet is instilled with life changing qualities; Qualities that he will carry all of his years. It has been such a blessing to watch our son develop self confidence and leadership skills and we would do it all over again if given the choice. Thank you, Hargrave!
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
I walked in the front door as a naïve and insecure young man. I walked out the back with my head held high, a sense of wellbeing, a direction and a good sense of how to get there. I now understand that to fail is not a character flaw, but a lesson to learn from and grow, and with growth comes greatness. I am able to admit when I am scared without shame and believe I can achieve anything with a confidence I would not have developed otherwise.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
Hang in there... Everyone feels lost in the beginning. Know that each and every person is there to help support you, and you (believe it or not) are helping to support them. It gets easier with time and will eventually become your new normal.
4.) What did you like most about your school?
The challenges and opportunities presented to me. There are so many clubs, sports, outings, gatherings and networking opportunities. Each of which offers personal growth, along with other leadership opportunities.
5.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
Well... I personally am a Delta Co. can, having spent all 4 years of my time there! I would suggest a little entrepreneurial spirit and sell snacks and goodies for some extra popularity (not to mention $$) when able.

Academics:

1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?
Having small class sizes, usually around 12 students, has made such a difference in accountability. This in turn has made a direct impact on grades, resulting in a 4.0+ GPA average YOY.

Athletics:

1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?
Having several options and rotating sports from season to season has allowed me to not only figure out what I’m good at (and not so good at) but has allowed me the opportunity to learn and practice sportsmanship. We build friendships and bonds that will last a lifetime!

Art, Music, and Theatre:

1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?
Although I was not involved directly in any of the Arts programs offered, I did participate in all the many parades, which involved the marching band. They make up an entire unit and are a very talented group of young men.

Extracurricular Opportunities:

1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?
Beta Club, Color Guard, Camden Rifle, Eye of The Tiger (Cadre training) Yearbook Club and PADI Scuba Certification.

Dorm Life:

1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?
If you want your own room...you can get it, you just have to EARN IT!

Dining:

1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.
Although I did not care for every dish offered, there was always a plethora of choices and who can go wrong with the always offered back-up plan of cereal, fresh salad bars and a good old-fashioned PB&J!

Social and Town Life:

1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.
Chatham is a small Mayberry type town. We are hugely respected and supported by the community. We are in several parades during the year and even help decorate the downtown area for the holidays!
2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?
The Hargrave lifestyle is very structured. We form bonds and we have our socializing through our many varying activities and during sports, social events & optional outings offered on the weekends. Not only do you form relationships with your brothers but also with many of their families, in addition to your own.
