School Notes
- Founded in 1814, North Yarmouth Academy is an independent, coeducational day and boarding school serving students from Toddler through Postgraduate in the coastal town of Yarmouth, Maine-just 10 minutes from Portland and two hours from Boston. One of Maine's oldest independent schools, NYA offers a cohesive, mission-driven educational experience that emphasizes academic excellence, character development, and meaningful engagement at every stage of a student's journey. From the earliest years, NYA fosters curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning through developmentally appropriate, student-centered Montessori instruction through kindergarten. As students progress through Lower, Middle, and Upper School, the academic program becomes increasingly rigorous, emphasizing critical thinking, creativity, and real-world application. Small class sizes and dedicated faculty support personalized learning, while a comprehensive college counseling program guides Upper School and postgraduate students through a successful transition to college and beyond. NYA offers 18 AP courses, and signature offerings include seven Diplomas with Distinction, allowing students to pursue advanced, academic and service-oriented pathways, as well as a financial literacy curriculum designed to build lifelong skills. Beyond the classroom, NYA offers a rich array of opportunities in the arts, athletics, and leadership. Students participate in competitive interscholastic athletics with 25 varsity sports, including NEPSAC ice hockey, alongside robust visual and performing arts programs. Beginning in the 2026 2027 academic year, the Music Scholar Program will expand opportunities for talented musicians through advanced study, mentorship, and performance. NYA's boarding program provides a supportive residential experience for Upper School and Postgraduate students, featuring a modern, suite-style residence hall with private baths. Dining Services are led by a two-time James Beard Award nominee, reflecting the school's commitment to providing nutritious, thoughtfully prepared meals that support student well-being. With exceptional facilities, a close-knit community, and access to the cultural and educational resources of nearby Portland and Boston, North Yarmouth Academy prepares students at every level to lead with purpose and thrive in an ever-changing world.
