Activities During Boarding School Emma has a plethora of clubs and activities, from politics to baking, to animals to music and dancing. Any interest you ever had most likely has its own club, and if there isn't one, the school welcomes you to found it. Our lunch period is quite long so that you can spend half of it eating and socializing and the other at club meetings.
Reflections and Advice:

1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?

Emma Willard is an independent girls' preparatory school in Troy, NY. As one of the oldest schools of its kind, the campus is beautiful....grey-stone gothic architecture situated on a hill. There are even tunnels crossing underneath the campus for the times when weather does not permit one to walk outside. Classes are very small and everyone knows everyone else. Teachers, even those whom you've never had a class with, know your name. The number one issue on campus is respect--between students and faculty--and this makes for a very inviting and supportive environment.

2.)  What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?

The small size of classes helps you to feel more comfortable in voicing your opinions or concerns and helps you develop social skills. As far as academics, the devotion of the teachers to their work is inspiring and pushes you to excel and find your own particular interest.

3.)  What would you have done differently during your boarding school experience?

I would have joined more groups and athletic teams.

4.)  What would you never want to change about your school?

I would never want Emma to go co-ed. The single sex student body is essential to what Emma is.

5.)  What things could be improved about your school?

Expansion of the lounging areas.

6.)  Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?

Emma is a wonderful school where you will meet great friends and have a terrific preparation for college. Also, film producers seem to like the campus for shooting movies....The Emperors Club and other movies have been filmed and students sometimes get to be extras. :)

Academics:

1.) What did you like best about your school’s academics?

Emma's classes are tough by any estimation. You would never think of coming to class unprepared and can expect to have mountains of homework every night. While the work is daunting, you do have a lot of say in which classes you take and when. Emma definitely prepares you for college. I don't have nearly as much work now (in college) as I did at Emma.

2.) What did you like least about the academics in your school?

Sometimes the work load could be too excessive...

Athletics:

1.) What did you like best about your school’s athletics?

Emma has a wide array of athletic teams in all seasons. What is more, for those who do not want all the pressure of a real team, there are clubs in which sports are played on a more relaxed level. Additionally, as far as gym class goes, if you are not enrolled in a team or club sport, you have your choice of any of 10 different sports as a semester class.

2.) What did you like least about the athletics in your school?

Some of the teams, such as soccer and lacrosse, are very competitive and not everyone who wants to be on the team can participate.

Art, Music, and Theatre:

1.) What did you like best about your school’s art program?

Emma has great art classes like ceramics, photography, jewelry design and weaving--things you wouldn't normally learn in a typical art class. Weaving was especially enjoyable...I made scarves and other projects.

2.) What did you like least about your school’s art program?

The favorite art classes fill up quickly so it is sometimes difficult to get into the class you want.

Extracurricular Opportunities:

1.) What did you like most about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?

2.) What did you like least about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?

Dorm Life:

1.) What was the best thing about dorm life in your school?

Emma has both day and boarding students (40-60% ratio). Morning reports, in which all students gather together, helps everyone interact regardless of day or boarding title. Day students often spend the weekend at the school and often boarders go home with day students.

2.) What did you like least about dorm life?

The opportunity to interact with men is somewhat difficult. Although there are occasional dances, they are not well attended by guys.

Dining:

1.) What was the best thing about your dining arrangements?

Meals are served in two different dining halls where there is always a hot and cold buffet. The chefs are quite willing to accomodate girls with special dietary needs (vegan, allergies, etc.)

2.) What did you like least about your dining arrangements?

Many students eat way too much at meals due to the abundance of food....consequently, many gain a few pounds.

Social and Town Life:

1.) How welcome did you feel by the other students when you first arrived at the school?

People are extremely welcoming at Emma. Teachers and students go out of their ways to make you feel at home.

2.) Describe the level of diversity and integration of students in your school:

The student population is quite diverse, ethnically and socially, so anyone can find a niche.

3.) Describe typical fun activities you did on a weekend:

Meeting up with friends to go to the mall, movie, out to eat, etc.

4.) What was the town like?

Troy is not the best city, however there are weekend trips to Albany where there are malls and better areas to go to restaurants and parks.
