1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
When Reading a sample review of a school I head the expected comments: small class sizes, a unique campus, a close teacher-student relationship, and an excellent athletic department. Yes, Avon Old Farms has all of these qualities, but it is the truly close bonds that have been formed with my AOF brethren that makes me love this school and always be in ecstasy on the day of return. The friends I have made here are just as, if not stronger, than those with my actual brothers and sisters (I have six siblings). Of the Avon family I have twelve brothers that live in my hall, and with these men--because that is what Avon Old Farms has molded us into--I have had the greatest times of my life. My hall consists of students from Miami, Korea, Jamaica, Denver, Long Island, San Francisco, Sweden, and Iowa, and myself a local of Connecticut. People think of a small school with a wooded campus as lacking diversity, this is completely untrue of AOF. Unfortunately, I have come to the realization that college will only be anticlimactic after these four amazing years of my life.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
When I came into this school I had C's and some D's for my grades. Avon transformed me into an amazing student who actually does his work and tries his hardest. I never applied myself before, and now I am on the Headmaster's list with a GPA of over 3.8. I have to say that my teachers, who are also my coaches, advisors and dorm parents, pushed me to bring out my full potential and truly brought me out of my adolescence.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
I would have worked harder. When I first came to the school I took almost no honors courses and I took Spanish 1 again. I'm kicking myself in the butt right now because I wish that I had pushed myself harder. I'm not saying go out there and overload yourself with painful courses, but don't be a slacker.
4.) What would you never want to change about your school?
The dorms, the sit-down dinners, and the chapel talks given by seniors, faculty and respected members of the outside community on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
5.) What things could be improved about your school?
Many people say they want girls at the school, but I find it much easier to learn without the distraction and the embarassment of getting a wrong answer in a class discussion. I would have to say that I would like to have the administration trust us more with our free time and give us more of it.
6.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
VISIT THE SCHOOL! Come visit the campus, go to classes, and spend a night in the dorms. This is the only way that you will be able to see how amazing it is and that what I have been saying is the truth.
1.) What did you like best about your schools academics?
Small classes are great, but I can't hide out when I don't do my homework. I suppose that is a good thing. The classes are hard, but that is also a great thing because it keeps you intellectually stimulated and always on your toes for what is thrown your way in the classroom.
2.) What did you like least about the academics in your school?
I suppose the worst part is that I have limited free time when taking on all of my classes. Of course that depends on whether or not you take AP/honors/regular classes. However, this will prepare me for college and make it a piece of cake.
1.) What did you like best about your schools athletics?
An amazing coaching staff! Continually Avon performs amazingly well, not only in just football, hockey and lacrosse, but through Golf, Tennis, Squash, Track, swimming and soccer. Avon produces professional and Division 1 athletes year after year.
2.) What did you like least about the athletics in your school?
The worst part about athletics is the same at all schools, they are hard, tiring and full of sweat.
1.) What did you like best about your schools art program?
I do not know much about the arts of AOF, but from our plays, musicals and many awards won every year, I can assume that we are better than average.
2.) What did you like least about your schools art program?
They only thing bad about the arts program (since I have limited experience in it) is that the art building is pretty far from my dorm.
1.) What did you like most about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?
Jeez that list of clubs is long. I love that there is always something going on around campus, whether it is a school dance, Habitat for Humanity, the nimrod club (an AOF community service type program, mostly within the surrounding woods of the school), or the actual clubs that meet and play pick up games of stick ball or ultimate frisbee, or the chess and stock market club.
2.) What did you like least about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?
We have so many clubs that sometimes students become distracted by one or the other and are not completely dedicated to one or two.
1.) What was the best thing about dorm life in your school?
As I spoke about in the school overview, the bonds I have formed with my AOF brothers. Also, the vertical housing. For each of the four halls in a dorm, there are different classes. this removes hazing and actually creates friends between seniors and freshmen.
2.) What did you like least about dorm life?
The rooms are small, but that is offset by the fact that you do not spend much time there because everyone is so active.
1.) What was the best thing about your dining arrangements?
Sit-down formal dinners. People complain about these, and demand more buffets, but it is a fact that these family style dinners let everyone get to know each other and really does make the school into one large family.
2.) What did you like least about your dining arrangements?
Lunch is required. Sometimes I just want to go take a nap before practice. Also the food begins to get repetitive after four years.
1.) How welcome did you feel by the other students when you first arrived at the school
I was nervous at first, as expected, but I easily made friends. Like I said in the overview, my friends and I have an amazing relationship.
2.) Describe the level of diversity and integration of students in your school:
There are many foreign students. My best friend is from Korea and he just moved to Indiana this summer (ya, it's an odd choice of location). I actually went to Korea with him over spring break before he moved.
3.) Describe typical fun activities you did on a weekend:
I meet with my girlfriend (yes, I have a girlfriend at an all guys school, there are two all female schools within running distance, at least for a Cross Country athlete anyway). I have also frequented the movies since the school provides for the cost of the tickets. I also go to the mall, watch/perform in sports games, go to dances and take part in club activities.
4.) What was the town like?
You can go to the local commons where there is a strip mall that includes a movie theater.
