1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
At PEA, we have the Harkness method. Many years ago, Edward Harkness challenged PEA faculty to come up with a method of teaching so that the students were also the teachers, and vice versa. After some failed attempts, the faculty came up with the Harkness system, where everyone sits at a circular table and everyone participates. The teacher is mostly there to guide the discussion.
I think the last word in that paragraph describes why I liked the Harkness system so much. We had the opportunity to discuss instead of just listening to a teacher talk. And I don't believe raising your hand was even allowed. We had to learn how to not interrupt one another and wait our turn, and once that happened, we had some of the most incredible discussions. People really get into books and everything when they are given the chance to talk about it.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
The best thing? Probably that I had the best experience that I could ever dream of. I can't even pick just one thing out. I matured faster(or at least in a different way) and really came to appreciate the challenge of learning. I made incredible relationships with people in and out of the dorm, and maybe more importantly, with my teachers. I still e-mail my dorm head, English teacher, bio teacher, marine bio teacher to let them know how I'm doing, to ask them how they are doing, or to let them know some interesting fact.
Exeter gave me the opportunity to learn who I was. Not who I should be. I got to try out so many different courses and volunteer in what I wanted to volunteer in(community service is not required).
Sometimes people get into the routine of just trying to make it through Exeter and the challenges it faces, and say that they wouldn't do it again if they had to, but my answer, no matter how stressed I am, has and will always be a definite YES. I would do everything I did at Exeter ten times over again. My time there meant SO much to me.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
Even though I'm not sure I would have had the time, I would have liked to become more involved in things....more clubs, not just community service. Maybe do more random activities. And I would definitely try a sport and do more art classes. And maybe try out for concert choir.
4.) What would you never want to change about your school?
Harkness system, student faculty relationships, the beauty, and so much more!
5.) What things could be improved about your school?
haha, dining hall maybe? Nah, it's really not bad. The only annoying things are the random wind tunnels around campus...
6.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
Have fun. Try not to stress. Make faculty friends.
Merrill is an awesome dorm! And for incoming students, I think it's getting renovated in '05 or '06, so that's always nice ;)
Also, find a place on campus that is yours, whether a niche in the library or in the dorm or in the science building. "me time" is always important.
1.) What did you like best about your schools academics?
As mentioned before, the Harkness system. I learned so much more that way, and things got explained. Plus, the teachers are SO good about getting extra help. Exeter is extremely challenging academically, which I loved, but of course I couldn't understand everything the first time, and my teachers were always there to look over another draft of a paper or test corrections.
2.) What did you like least about the academics in your school?
The random bad teachers. I promise you that there aren't a lot, but basically one in every department that you don't want. Some were just too hard (i.e. the whole Latin department) and some I swear I taught them more than they taught me.
The environment wasn't TOO competetive but some people were just too stressed about everything. I had to learn to take things at ease and that there was more than getting an 11.
1.) What did you like best about your schools athletics?
I didn't really participate in sports except for the swim test, "Prep Spaz"(intro to all sports basically freshman year), and dance, but I'm still amazed at the sports we have. We have everything from lacrosse to water polo to ice hockey, and if we don't have something you can like, usually you can do an independent sport. I've had friends who did rock climbing and horseback riding as their sports outside of school.
2.) What did you like least about the athletics in your school?
Nothing, really. The coaches as far as I know were great. I didn't hear too many bad things about athletics.
1.) What did you like best about your schools art program?
So many classes that I wish I had taken! We have our own ceramics and photography studios, along with paint and sculpture. I wish I could have taken a lot more art classes than I did in my four years.
The teachers are awesome too. They teach you a lot and really appreciate art.
Our music department is absolutely incredible too...you want to learn a certain instrument, they'll find you a teacher for private lessons.
(theatre's good too!)
2.) What did you like least about your schools art program?
I wish I knew more about it, but they are kind of secluded in their section of the Academy Buildling. They are working on getting out there more and they had an art open house in the spring to let people know what they offered.
1.) What did you like most about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?
There were so many to choose from! We had ESSO, a very very large community service program, with many clubs in it, including SPCA, which I headed last year.
Also, for other clubs, as with anything else, if there wasn't one, there could be one, with you as the head!
2.) What did you like least about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?
I just wish I had more time to do them.
1.) What was the best thing about dorm life in your school?
God, so many things! I guess the relationships I formed. I know that some of the people in my dorm I'll keep in touch with for basically the rest of my life. The faculty in my dorm also. The relationships made are SO strong, it's incredible.
2.) What did you like least about dorm life?
Truthfully? In all girls' dorms, we tend to feed off of each other's emotions, if you know what I mean. We'll all be really nice OR in a horrible mood at the same time, causing mini dramas within the dorm. Luckily, those don't usually last.
1.) What was the best thing about your dining arrangements?
One of the dining halls was connected to my dorm, which was EXTREMELY nice, and the dining hall people were really sweet. Every Sunday and Wednesday morning people are there to make homemade omelettes, which are SOOOO good.
2.) What did you like least about your dining arrangements?
Sometimes the food could get really repetitive. Like chicken, it seemed almost every day. End of the term meals suck, because they have to use up everything.
1.) How welcome did you feel by the other students when you first arrived at the school
Although freshmen(aka preps) get crap, of course, there seems to be a strange respect for them. They get away with the excuse of "they're just preps" when they make mistakes, and we get to see the changes that we all made. Plus, everyone is friendly and says hi on the paths.
Fitting in, especially the first year, is easy. I started hanging around with people in my dorm, then classes, then outside of classes. It sort of spreads out that way on its own.
2.) Describe the level of diversity and integration of students in your school:
We are pretty diverse. State-wise, there is a student from every state except South Dakota or something like that. Im not sure about the ratios of African American or Native American or international, but there is definitely a lot of diversity.
3.) Describe typical fun activities you did on a weekend:
There are always things to do on campus, like hypnotists, comedians, bands, etc....Grill Bingo was always my favorite. But if you want to get off campus, there are movies and dinner downtown, a bus to the mall and movies, and on long weekends, sometimes a bus to kittery. other than that, sometimes just movies in the dorms or dances were what I would do.
4.) What was the town like?
Students went into town all the time. Although some townies could be sketchy in the random alleys at night, everyone was friendly, and there was plenty to do...and eat! There is an old- fashioned movie theatre downtown, along with all sorts of resturants, hair salons, ice cream, gift shops, and more. And it is really pretty.
