Activities During Boarding School I played baseball for all four years and was the captain for two. I also participated in student government junior year as class representative. Sophomore year I was chosen to be in Spanish National Honor Society, and served as Vice President my senior year.

Reflections and Advice:

1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
Perhaps what was most unique about La Lumiere was the required attendance for certain school functions, including plays and sports games. These events strengthened school spirit and communal bonds. While other schools may have larger student bodies, La Lumiere's community connection is unmatched. From plays to cultural gatherings, students are always eager to promote school pride and social cohesiveness.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
I feel that I am more ready for college and life having been at a boarding school. La Lumiere got me ready for the high and lows of college. I feel that life at a boarding school makes a person stronger and more prepared for rough patches. I think that best choice I made was simply going to a school that encouraged such community, in every aspect of life. I really feel I made a great choice.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
I would have not tried to overextend myself as much. Sometimes, I tried to do too much and would become burnt out easily. My advice would be to stick what you love to do, don't try to do everything. Keep to the basics: academics, one sport at a time, and one club. Anything more is extra stress. Stick to what you enjoy doing and you'll be happier for it.
4.) What did you like most about your school?
I enjoyed the the professors the most. They all cared about the student's ability to learn. Other schools do not come close to the teachers I had in four years. I could not be more thankful for those who helped me get to where I am academically.
5.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
Make friends with everyone. Don't stress out. Get involved when you can. Work hard, but not too hard.

Academics:

1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?
I really enjoyed the helpfulness of the teachers. All of them were incredibly helpful both inside and out of class. Their willingness to help students understand material is unmatched. Never once did I feel that I had nowhere to go for academic aid or assistance. Throughout my four years I felt that I was really part of a scholastic community that helped to foster my intellectual growth. Help was always available, and I believe that is what set La Lumiere apart from other schools.

Athletics:

1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?
I enjoyed the non-political nature of athletics. Since we are a boarding school, we did not have to deal with those who sought to promote only certain athletes. I truly believe that everyone had a fair shot to compete and win. As an athlete, I did not have to worry about losing my position for personal or political motivations. La Lumiere sticks to the fundamentals of sport, competition and improvement. I really enjoyed this aspect of La Lumiere athletics, as everyone was given a fair shot to compete and win.

Art, Music, and Theatre:

1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?
I enjoyed the engaging nature of the Arts program at La Lumiere. When drama had a production, everyone knew about and went. The Arts certainly do not go unappreciated. Even students who did not participate in the Arts still had an embracing mentality to what other students created. The cultural aspect of La Lumiere is certainly a community-based program that fosters student creativity and social engagement.

Extracurricular Opportunities:

1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?
I appreciated the wide variety of activities offered at La Lumiere. From community service to academic clubs, there was certainly a club for everyone. That way, I believe, no one was left out of social bonding. Being a boarding school, there was always something to do and something to be a part of. Extracurriculars are simply a way of life at La Lumiere. I also cherished the community aspect of activities. They fostered community growth and bonding. Being an integral part of La Lumiere life, activities only added to the quality of my experience there.

Dorm Life:

1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?
Although I did not live on campus, I did notice the way boarding students enjoyed dorm life. I cannot one aspect that stood out, but I can say that a lot of students I knew really liked the general experience of dorm life. They relished the late night studying, the bonding over video games, etc. I honestly believe that many dorm students appreciated the relationships dorm life offered to them. Furthermore, I never really heard students complain about living facilities qualities or anything of the like. La Lumiere really does a good job of providing excellent facilities to students.

Dining:

1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.
I liked the variety of dining options at La Lumiere. The food was overall pretty good and the cooking staff did an excellent job of varying meals and such. At times, I feel that the quality of the food was taken for granted because it was such a constant in my daily school life. To be frank, I never had any complaints about the dining experiences at La Lumiere.

Social and Town Life:

1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.
La Lumiere has the best of both worlds: seclusion and an urban area nearby. While campus may be set in the woods, South Bend, La Porte, and Michigan City are a short drives away. Each offered something different for students to do on the weekend. They provided a nice escape for students looking for non academic things to do. Weekends do not have to be boring, as many options exist for fun.
2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?
I enjoyed how seniors and freshmen interacted. Grade levels do not matter socially at La Lumiere. Everyone gets along, regardless of grade level. In this way, La Lumiere is a family. I appreciated this about the school, as I feel it fosters a stronger academic community.
