Activities During Boarding School Wayland has Student Council, which I am the president of, an ecology club, forensics, and debate. I am also a freshmen starter on the Varsity soccer team, one of the top two skiiers on Varsity, and I will be runnig track and field this spring.
Reflections and Advice:

1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?

Wayland Academy focuses on gaining knowledge and character, rather than just knowledge. Students learn how to eat and behave at formal dinners and leadership skills are improved. Wayland has been a great experience for me. Every semester students must complete ten hours of community service along with three mandatory sports. Therefore, students learn responsibilty, respect, and dedication. Wayland has a small campus located in a town of just over 15,000 people. It gives it a very quiet environment which makes learning easier. -Steven Pals Class President of '07

2.)  What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?

I ran for class president and after a month of speeches, poster making, and debates I finally won. This school is incredibly competitive, and forces you to excel in life.

3.)  What would you have done differently during your boarding school experience?

I would have been a little more outgoing. It was hard coming to a whole new environment, but even though I could be antisocial at times, no one holds grudges.

4.)  What would you never want to change about your school?

The whole experience of living away from home and making your own decisions.

5.)  What things could be improved about your school?

Better computers and a better soccer field. Also no computer classes are offered. It makes me sad.

6.)  Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?

Everyone knows everything here. If you come for a tour, your tourguide will tell you the "hot spots" on campus and around town. If they don't, just ask. Also if you get your applications in early, you may end up with the dorm-suite. It's twice the size of the regular dorm rooms. There are only a few though...

Academics:

1.) What did you like best about your school’s academics?

My math class has four students, and in one quarter, I have learned twice as much as last year. Wayland also offers a very competitive atmosphere where the bar of expectations is always being raised.

2.) What did you like least about the academics in your school?

Sometimes small classes limit the variety of people, discussions, and opinions in classes.

Athletics:

1.) What did you like best about your school’s athletics?

There are small teams, with no cuts. Therefore everyone gets a chance to play.

2.) What did you like least about the athletics in your school?

The enrollment of Wayland is miniscule so there aren't as many talented athletes. We compete in the lowest division possible and still manage to lose.

Art, Music, and Theatre:

1.) What did you like best about your school’s art program?

The art classes are very small and in depth.

2.) What did you like least about your school’s art program?

I have no complaints what-so-ever.

Extracurricular Opportunities:

1.) What did you like most about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?

Student council and forensics/debate are my favorite activities. They allow growth in leadership and self acknowledgement. There is a huge array of activities offered so there is never a dull moment.

2.) What did you like least about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?

I have not stumbled upon any complaints yet.

Dorm Life:

1.) What was the best thing about dorm life in your school?

I am a Day Student...

2.) What did you like least about dorm life?

I am a Day Student...

Dining:

1.) What was the best thing about your dining arrangements?

Wayland has gourmet chefs and there is not one person who in their right mind, would ever skip lunch! It rocks my world!

2.) What did you like least about your dining arrangements?

It is so great, nothing wrong at all except there isn't enough time to eat everything you want.

Social and Town Life:

1.) How welcome did you feel by the other students when you first arrived at the school?

Everyone is so great and friendly here. There hasn't been any hazing yet and there are always smiles being exchanged.

2.) Describe the level of diversity and integration of students in your school:

There are Koreans, Germans, Chinese, Japanese, Tiawanese, Canadians, Puerto Ricans, Italians. There are Muslims, Hindus, Jews, Christians, and Athiests.

3.) Describe typical fun activities you did on a weekend:

Shopping, movies, hanging out with friends, haunted houses, you want it, we got it!

4.) What was the town like?

The town is rather small but less than an hour away from Madison, and just over an hour away from Milwaukee. There are always weekend trips to go to the mall, movies, or Great America.
