Activities During Boarding School J.V Soccer, lacrosse, volley ball, Swimming, track. Backstage work in Huck Finn. Sports was a major activity, Wednesday and Saturdays were games. Every afternoon after classes we would have practice, if you did not play a sport you would have to have an art project or be in a play.
Reflections and Advice:

1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?

Westminster is a very small boarding school in Simsbury, CT. It is very personable. Teachers live on every hallway and they all take an active interest in their students. Classes are small and also six days a week. Boarding school life keeps you very busy, but you make some really close friends.

2.)  What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?

This experience really made me grow, I learned a lot from all the different people there.

3.)  What would you have done differently during your boarding school experience?

I don't think I would go to boarding school at the age of fourteen. I was not ready yet.

4.)  What would you never want to change about your school?

I am glad I went to boarding school. It was one great experience in total. I met some great people.

5.)  What things could be improved about your school?

Make it more diverse.

6.)  Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?

Make sure the school has everything you want. Make sure it has the activites that you like, and going to boarding school is your decision and not your parents.

Academics:

1.) What did you like best about your school’s academics?

The teachers. Many of them really liked what they taught and they tried their best to make it as interesting as possible. The teachers also lived on campus so they were easy to get in touch with and they were always there to try to help. The other really good thing about boarding school is it gets you ready for college. My first year of college was so easy because I had such good study habits from boarding school.

2.) What did you like least about the academics in your school?

We had classes six days a week. Half a day on Wednesday and half a day on Saturday so you did not have that much free time. This is a school that pushes you to do your best. Workload was a lot but you had study hall every night so you had time to do your work. Boarding school is competitve but teachers are always there to help so if you are struggling they will get you tutors or anything else you might need.

Athletics:

1.) What did you like best about your school’s athletics?

That they pushed me to do my best, and they got me in the best shape of my life. They were also required and there were so many levels of the sport so that if you have never played a sport before you could always play. All games were played against other schools and there was some competitivness but it was always fun.

2.) What did you like least about the athletics in your school?

The fact that they are required was sometimes hard. If the school didn't have a sport that you liked it was very hard to get out of doing that sport.

Art, Music, and Theatre:

1.) What did you like best about your school’s art program?

The plays were always really good-- they would go all out with costumes, and makeup and they were also a lot of fun to watch and be in. If you played an instrument they would get teachers from off campus to continue your lessons.

2.) What did you like least about your school’s art program?

Nothing-- they put a lot of time and money into them they were pretty good.

Extracurricular Opportunities:

1.) What did you like most about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?

If you were interested in doing anything from yearbook to poems to outdoor activites, there were clubs. Teachers and staff were always there to mentor you and help you out.

2.) What did you like least about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?

Westminster is a small school so the size of the clubs were not that big. There might only be a few people in the club.

Dorm Life:

1.) What was the best thing about dorm life in your school?

The fact that you know everybody. It was a fun school to be at because everyone was so close. This school was in a small town so there was not that much around and you were not able to have a car so you had to walk. But you could get food delivered which was always good.

2.) What did you like least about dorm life?

The fact that you did know everyone, sometimes the school was way too small and too many people knew too much about you.

Dining:

1.) What was the best thing about your dining arrangements?

Food was good but it is never homecooking. We did have sitdown dinner three times a week. You were assigned to a table and you had to wear classroom dress. The tables changed every two weeks.

2.) What did you like least about your dining arrangements?

The hours were not always that convenient.

Social and Town Life:

1.) How welcome did you feel by the other students when you first arrived at the school?

I came from an international school in Norwas. Boarding school is very white and very upper class so it takes a while to fit in, but once you do fit in it is a lot of fun.

2.) Describe the level of diversity and integration of students in your school:

3.) Describe typical fun activities you did on a weekend:

Went to the mall or movies, played sports, and hung out with friends.

4.) What was the town like?

Westminster is in a small town so there was not that much to see. On weekends there were vans to the movies or the mall.
