Reflections and Advice:

1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
The location of Stanstead College provides many activities which may not be accessible to other schools. It is so close to many quality ski hills and there was opportunity to go every weekend, if one wanted. Also available are many winter activities such as Winter Carnival and a trip to the Cabane a Sucre (Maple Syrup). Stanstead is a small school with a high percentage of boarding students yet there is a very diverse student population. This allows students to get to know everyone and learn about many different cultures. The small size also allows for close student-teacher communication. Students have many opportunities to discuss problems with teachers, whether academic, social, or other.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
I really enjoyed my time at Stanstead. The focus on academics really allowed me to become more focused and I was able to get into a very good university. I was also able to participate and excel in sports. I was able to get trophies for soccer and for the female all-round athlete in the school. Plays were always fun. The most important thing was the friends I made.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
Be sure to talk to your roommates and dorm mates. You will be spending most of your time with them so it is good if you get along. Try many of the activities available. There are some great ski hills so try to go, even if you don't ski. With the wide diversity in the student population, it is a great way to learn about other cultures.
4.) What did you like most about your school?
The thing I like the most was the sports program. I was always very active and I was able to excel in sports I already knew, such as soccer, as well as try new sports. Playing with other people gives you a spirit of camaraderie which continues on and off the field.
5.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
Make sure you try the skiing. There are not many places where there are so many quality hills within such a short drive.

Academics:

1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?
The small class size was a very big advantage. Teachers were able to get to know every student, and were able to teach effectively. The learning environment was one where excellence was expected, but also made achievable. Teachers were always available for discussion, or extra teaching. The teachers wanted you to learn and excel, which in turn made us want to learn and excel.

Athletics:

1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?
I really enjoyed the athletic environment that Stanstead provides. As someone with an athletic background, I was able to continue that at Stanstead. Because you had to choose a sport every term, each student has the opportunity to try many different sports. The teams play within a league and is generally competitive with other schools in the area. There are many facilities available to students, including soccer fields, rugby fields, football field, softball pitches, track, tennis courts, squash courts, gym, ice rink, and a full sized swimming pool. These facilities are available to students to use on their own during free time.

Art, Music, and Theatre:

1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?
I was involved in the Theatre Arts program for all three years that I was at Stanstead. We put on a play each year including the Odd Couple (female version)and Makin' It. Students were involved in all aspects such as acting, prop design, costume design, and assistant directing. As well, each year the students in grade 9 put on a play, in a similar fashion. I was not involved with the Visual arts program, it was certainly available. There is an art club in which students were able to work with various mediums. As well, there are art courses available within the curriculum. I was able to be part of the photography club in which I learned how to take and process my own film. For music, the is a choir which sang at every formal function. As well, students were able to take lessons in piano, guitar, etc... Also, there were variety shows which showcased the various talents of the students. There was always space available for students wanting to rehearse their own music.

Extracurricular Opportunities:

1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?
I was part of the Archives club, which helped to find and organize items from Stanstead's past. I was also part of the House Committee for Webster house. We organized movie nights, fund raisers, planned the end of the year party. There were many volunteer opportunities available at the school such as tutoring for the public school, volunteer at the old age home, etc...

Dorm Life:

1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?
I stayed in Webster house which is the dorm for the senior girls. There are two students to a room with one bathroom shared between two rooms. Prefects got rooms with their own bathroom. The first year I was there was the first year that Webster was open so it was very new and nice. Students had to keep their rooms clean or they got hours (detention). Students on the honour roll had special privileges such as having no lights out, watch tv on Saturday night (late). There is a common tv room, kitchen, and laundry room. Students were able to hang out in each other's rooms during free times, everyone was welcome, and it was a very friendly atmosphere.

Dining:

1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.
There is one large dining room. Students were allowed to sit wherever they wanted during breakfast, lunch, and on weekends, but on weeknight dinners we had to sit at assigned seating which changed every term. There was a wide variety of foods and the chef was able to accommodate people with special diets, i.e. peanut allergy. There was a buffet for lunch and breakfast but dinner was sit down and everyone had the same meal. Produce was fresh, and the food was never off. My favorite part was the ice cream freezer (usually a few varieties).

Social and Town Life:

1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.
Stanstead is a small town with a few restaurant and shops. Most students walked across the border to Derby Line for the pizza and the American snacks. Because Stanstead College has such a large campus, most of the time we stayed on campus.
2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?
Because Stanstead is so small, there were opportunities to get to know everyone. There were always dances and activities for the students and during free time, students spent their time with others. With the sports program, there was always people that you could relate to. Although most time was spent in sports or club activities, they were also many social events.
