Reflections and Advice:

1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?

1) Block Schedule for classes - Allowed me to concentrate on two subjects per term, creating a more intense and challenging curriculum. It also allowed extraordinary term abroad opportunities. Yet, it limited me to only taking 4 AP courses each year. 2) Work Program - A very nice tradition that promoted enormous school pride and made me understand the school's educational mission/goal.

2.)  What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?

Best thing happened to me was my improvement in writing. Coming from a british colonial school in hong kong, I received scholarships in English studies. Yet, when I attended Northfield Mount Hermon, I suddenly felt that I was no longer the star, but a normal below-average English student. I worked very hard in writing and was pleased to see my improvement when I got an A in senior English, which, to me, meant much more than the scholarships.

3.)  What would you have done differently during your boarding school experience?

I wouldn't do anything differently during my boarding school experience. I think I had fun and learned a lot.

4.)  What would you never want to change about your school?

Diversity is crucial to my school. It signifies the school spirit and is also a comparative advantage that the school holds when compared to other boarding schools.

5.)  What things could be improved about your school?

The school could be more effective in managing its two campuses, minizing the maintenace costs so that the money could go to programs related to academics.

6.)  Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?

East Hall is a wonderful dorm, with a true sense of brotherhood and history.

Academics:

1.) What did you like best about your school’s academics?

The block-schedule allowed me to focus on two subjects at a time, resulting in a more intense and challenging curriculum. The minor courses complemented with the major courses effectively, allowing me to explore in subjects that I wouldn't have touched upon if it wasn't for the block-schedule. Faculty members were amazingly caring and professional, as they always seemed to be interested in the students both academically and personally. They also offered an extremely high standard of teaching, and were always open for after-class discussions.

2.) What did you like least about the academics in your school?

Didn't like the college counselling offered in my school.

Athletics:

1.) What did you like best about your school’s athletics?

I liked the balance between team sports and physical education. I am pleased that I wasn't obliged to play a team sport. Moreover, I like the sportsmanship that the school emphasized.

2.) What did you like least about the athletics in your school?

Didn't like the fact that although some students wanted to do a team sport, they weren't given the opportunity to do so. Many students graduated without even playing a team sport.

Art, Music, and Theatre:

1.) What did you like best about your school’s art program?

I liked the diversity of the school's art program, ranging from fine arts to theater production. On top of the diversity of subjects, the art program also offered numerous extra-curricular activities that enabled students to apply their education in real life.

2.) What did you like least about your school’s art program?

I didn't like the fact that the school's art program, though diverse, didn't offer AP Art History.

Extracurricular Opportunities:

1.) What did you like most about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?

I liked the numerous leadership opportunities offered at my school. I felt that every student had the opportunity to gain leadership positions.

2.) What did you like least about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?

I felt that the student government wasn't effective, and appeared to be only a title that members used to add to their resumes.

Dorm Life:

1.) What was the best thing about dorm life in your school?

I liked the dorm spirit in my school and the fact that every dorm had its own identity. I made the school a real "home away from home". The student leader and RA system was also very effective.

2.) What did you like least about dorm life?

I liked everything about my school's dorm life, except the limited choices of late night food access.

Dining:

1.) What was the best thing about your dining arrangements?

Variety was the best thing about my school's dining arrangements. We could go to any of the six dining halls on two campuses, making the walks shorter during winters.

2.) What did you like least about your dining arrangements?

The food was, generally speaking, quite bad. The ingridients were fine but the kitchen staff didn't seem to know how to prepare food...

Social and Town Life:

1.) How welcome did you feel by the other students when you first arrived at the school?

Students were extremely friendly and open. There was no discriminations against anyone, and the students were always eager to know more about each other. There was no problem for me in terms of fitting in.

2.) Describe the level of diversity and integration of students in your school:

Diversity was truly amazing, and I truly believe that no schools can compare to the level of diversity in my school. Not only was our student population made up of students from different backgrounds, but the students were also eager to learn about one another's culture and were always open to differences.

3.) Describe typical fun activities you did on a weekend:

Order Chinese take-outs, go to school dances, chit-chat in dorms.

4.) What was the town like?

Students didn't venture much into town, as the town of Northfield had literally nothing except a convinience store and a couple small restaurants. Closest civilization was 15 minutes away, where we could at least see a movie.
