Reflections and Advice:
1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?

Andrews has a real feeling of history and tradition as well as a very warm and welcoming community. My friends from Andrews remain some of the most interesting and unique people I have ever known, even 7 years after graduation. The international students open the world up to students from this country who choose to live on campus, allowing for exploration of other cultures in a way that is unavailable to most other high school students.

2.)  What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?

Living on my own at Andrews was the best preparation for college I can imagine. The structure forced me to learn study habits which would take me through college but being away from home took away the desire to rebel once I got to college and allowed me to focus on academics. Once I got to my college dorm, I felt like I was much more prepared than the other women on my floor because I had already lived away from home. Encouragement to participate in sports and clubs gave me confidence. Overall, I can say that I probably would not have turned out to be the person I am today without my time at boarding school. The boost of self-confidence and ambition I got at Andrews allowed me to succeed academically and socially in college and has driven me to law school.

3.)  What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?

I wouldn't do anything differently. My advice for kids considering boarding school is to keep an open mind. The myths of what boarding school kids are like are just not true. Andrews is a laid back, warm community, not at all like the sanitized distant image that most have of boarding school.

4.)  What did you like most about your school?

Overall, the best thing about Andrews was the community. There is nobody else quite like an Andrews girl.

5.)  Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?

Check out the Equestrian Center and field house, both of which opened after I graduated but have visited. They are beautiful facilities.

Academics:

1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?

The best part of the academics at Andrews was small classes and attention from the teachers. I felt extremely prepared for college with the material I learned at Andrews. Academics aren't extremely competitive between students but they are well taught by experience teachers who truly care about their students. Coming to Andrews from a very large public high school, this was an incredible change.

Athletics:

1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?

I most liked the no-cut policy. Every girl who wants to play will get the opportunity.

Art, Music, and Theatre:

1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?

Even those not terribly talented are encouraged and included. There is also opportunity to take lessons in art, dance and music at the neighboring fine arts center, which I did both years I was at Andrews.

Extracurricular Opportunities:

1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?

I liked the opportunity to interact with the teachers out of class, to get to know them as people, not just educators.

Dorm Life:

1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?

Dorm life was wonderful. Since there are less than 25 girls in each dorm, it is a real feeling of family among those in the dorms. My closest friends at Andrews were the girls I lived with and are those that I remain in touch with, 7 years later. The dorms all have a kitchen which is open to students to keep their own food in and cook in. Also, the house parents are wonderful - they really take an interest in the girls living in their house and while they have to institute discipline and routines, they are loving and caring. Your dorm at Andrews will probably be a lot nicer than your college dorm!

Dining:

1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.

Meals were eaten with the girls from your dorm; only one night a week was a formal meal but that meal was eaten with all the resident teachers and students mixed at different tables. Each night prayer is said by one of the girls in their native language.

Social and Town Life:

1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.

The town of Willoughby is within walking distance. When I was there, we spent a lot of time at the local coffee shop. The school also organizes buses to a local grocery store at least once a week to get food and other necessities.

2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?

There were plenty of opportunities to meet boys in the area at school dances, both those hosted by Andrews and at other private schools in the area.
