Sports and Activities:
During my time at St. Andrew’s I was a part of the school choir and on the fencing team. Choir meets every day for about 30 minutes. It’s a great time to practice your craft and hone in on your skills. It was always an encouraging time.Fencing meets after school Monday-Friday. The team’s motto is “Honor, Discipline, Courage, Courtesy” and that’s just what the school stands for! While fencing is a great way to exercise, it also requires respect and kindness to your companions. The school also has a student publication, Scribble & Dot and a Foodies Club!

Reflections and Advice:

1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
St. Andrew’s Academy is home to one of the best communities I have had the privilege to be a part of. It’s a micro-school, so everyone is very close. They have become a second family to me and I am forever grateful. The school is also found in the Lake Almanor Basin. To be able to live and work in such a beautiful place is definitely a blessing.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
St. Andrew’s treats their students like adults, not children. Things aren’t “dumbed-down.” I was forced to grow in ways I wouldn’t have otherwise. Yes, it’s challenging, but you won’t know what your capable of until you do it.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
Boarding School is hard, but it’s a fantastic experience. It allows you to try new things and get out of your comfort zone! My advice is to jump in head-first. You can do it! It may be difficult but I have never felt more proud than when I graduated, looked back on all of my achievements and realized that I did it, I thrived.
4.) What did you like most about your school?
St. Andrew’s is a home away from home. The people are fantastic, the academics are engaging, and the food is amazing.
5.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
Like anything in life, boarding school has it’s ups and downs, but I highly recommend this experience to anyone who wants to try something new!

Academics:

1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?
The academics at St. Andrew’s are rigorous, challenging, and enriching. They encourage the student to think outside of the box, to think for themselves. They encourage discussion and focus on the classics. They promote well-rounded minds and a love for learning—-something I did not find in the other schools I have attended. The students also seek to help each other learn, it’s not an “every man for himself” environment. We push each other to do our best and succeed! The workload varies, generally there is a lot of reading and writing, but none of it is busy-work. The professors care about every student and do their best to make everything accessible and graspable.

Athletics:

1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?
Fencing is a mandatory activity. By participating in sports with your fellow classmates you grow closer to them and improve relationships and friendships. In the winter, the students are also able to go skiing in the surrounding area.In the spring and the fall we play soccer together. The environment provides room for healthy competition, but nothing stifling. It meets each student where they are.

Art, Music, and Theatre:

1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?
St. Andrew’s has a long-standing choral history. The students always have a great time singing together. We also have traveled all over the U.S., Germany, and England on choir tours. If enough interest is generated, we pursue theatre. My favorite memory is doing a rendition of P.G. Woodhouse’s “Jeeves and Wooster.” It was a blast.

Extracurricular Opportunities:

1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?
St. Andrew’s works and plays as a team.We have a Service Club that helps people in the area with various needs. There is also room for more clubs and activities if so desired.

Dorm Life:

1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?
Dorm life was one of my favorite aspects at St. Andrew’s. The dorm is a big, beautiful, old house. It’s a great place to study or read, and hang out with your peers.

Dining:

1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.
The food at St. Andrew’s is always delicious. We have set meal times and it is not unusual for students to help with dinner prep.

Social and Town Life:

1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.
St. Andrew’s is found in the small town of Chester, CA. This gives the students a chance to experience something new. It’s quiet, peaceful, and serenely beautiful. As someone coming from Los Angeles, there was definitely a bit of culture shock. Living in a small town is a great experience. It feels like home, you get to know the people around town and you aren’t swept up in the chaos of traffic.
2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?
Everyone at St. Andrew’s is a friend. The students support and encourage each other and the teachers care about you. The tight-knit community was definitely a very formative experience.. We work hard and play hard together.
