Reflections and Advice:

1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
The motto of St Andrews Academy is “oratio, studium, labor” which translates to “prayer, study, work.” The school combines these three with the daily office before and after the school day, a rigorous liberal arts education, and various fundraising projects to raise money for travel, allowing the student to maintain a healthy mind, body and spirit during their time at St Andrews Academy.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
I acquired a love of learning at St Andrews Academy which still has not left me after four years of college. The professors do a beautiful job of inspiring their students to learn and to desire truth. I believe that students with an interest in good academics will thrive in this community.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
I would advise students not to be afraid of asking questions. My first year at St Andrews filled me with curiosity, but I was too proud to speak up and ask when I didn’t understand a particular topic. The teachers love getting to know their students and seeing their desire to know more, and will do everything they can to help you with anything you might need.
4.) What did you like most about your school?
I enjoyed matins the most. Starting the school day every morning with a sung service filled was hugely helpful whenever I was feeling overwhelmed by my school work, and being able to pray every day hugely impacted my grades.
5.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
To those prospective students considering St Andrews Academy, if you can make it through St Andrews Academy, you can make it anywhere. Don’t be afraid of the small size or the intimidating curriculum, it is worth the effort.

Academics:

1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?
The academics are geared towards freeing the mind of the student from the work-a-day world, and teaching them to think freely. Grammar, Logic, Rhetoric, Philosophy, English, Greek, Latin, and Biblical Studies are taught to the students to allow them to ponder the universal and abstract, while the sciences and maths allow them to look at the practical aspects of our world. The curriculum provides the perfect balance for a developed mind.

Athletics:

1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?
The athletics program consists mostly of fencing, the perfect sport for a liberal arts school, combining the mind and body in a beautiful game of technique and strategy. Private martial arts lessons are also offered to those who desire it.

Art, Music, and Theatre:

1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?
The only such art offered at St Andrews Academy is Choir. In the past the headmaster has put on plays for our local community, such as certain Shakespeare plays, and even a play-writ version of a PG Wodehouse classic. The choir has traveled all around the globe, singing in England, Germany, Italy, and all over the United States. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to travel and grow together in song.

Extracurricular Opportunities:

1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?
Extracurricular activities consist of pie selling, raking pine needles for the locals, and serving the community by participating in the St Andrews Church Choir and services. For fun, the headmaster often takes students down to the lake, which is large and quite clean, for wakeboarding, skiing, and inter-tubing on the speed boat.

Dorm Life:

1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?
The dorm is a large house where the headmaster lives with his family. The boarding students get to know each other quite well as a result allowing them to aid each other in their studies and have good discussion with the headmaster and one another.

Dining:

1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.
Breakfasts are prepared by students in turns, lunches are prepared individually by each student and dinner is eaten by the whole boarding community together with the headmaster and his family. Students are encouraged to help cook dinner and clean up afterwards. Dinners are most often cooked by the headmaster’s wife, who is one of the finest cooks in the area.

Social and Town Life:

1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.
The school is located in Chester, CA, which is a small logging town between the Sierra and Cascade mountains, just by Lassen National Park. As such, the surrounding landscape is gorgeous, with beautiful areas to explore, from caves, to lakes, to glorious mountaintops.
2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?
The size of the school allows students to get to know one another very well. Seeing that every hour of the day is spent in prayer, in study, in work and even in meals with your fellow students, it causes bonding on a mental and spiritual level. All of the students are pursuing goodness truth and beauty together. My best friends were made at St Andrews Academy, and I still keep in touch with them.
